Another question about tools!

Post by Noggin »

Ok, I have mostly put up the brackets for the two shelves that will be cut tomorrow

But, one screw in each is fixed behind a diagonal - is there a screwdriver attachment that I can get (or at least know what I'm talking about when I ask to borrow!!) that will reach in where a straight bar screwdriver (or the miniature screwdriver) can't get there???

A right angle adaptor or a wobble driver.

I'll find a link for a wobble driver in a mo.

You can also get 1/4" bit drivers that are spanner sized.

Most of those would work on the top one but the bottom one is a bit of a bastard. Worse because of where they are makes it difficult for me to reach them with the right (more dexterous) hand

I'll have another look tomorrow - might get away with a shorter screw too I guess :D

Drive the screw in at an angle with a long bladed screwdriver?

Did you not want a gap between the brackets for the bottom shelf to slide into?

That would have been more sensible!!! I was just using the holes already drilled for the top of the bottom bracket. Might change it tomorrow before I fit the shelves. I do so hate all the holes I've drilled and then changed things so have loads of holes left! But one day when I've saved to get everything done properly, I'll have the unused ones filled and the place plastered I guess!! LOL

Not enough room for me to do that. But I might try again tomorrow :D

I'd drill a hole through the angled piece, in line with the mounting hole big enough for a screwdriver shank. If the mounting screw is a Philips or pozi head it'd only need to be a 7mm hole.

Easy enough to line up and wouldn't affect the integrity of the shelf bracket. Much. :)

That ^

It's a properly shit design for a bracket but although it's a pita you can do it fairly easily with a long PZ2 driver if you angle it slightly.
Although I'm an electrician, so I'd probably use no-nails.
Maybe its just where it is - its difficult for me to get my right hand to it! Now you've mentioned it I'm seriously considering no nails!! LOL

Will consider that later too!! :D :D I had the angle brackets but once you move past those, there isn't a huge choice. IKEA do some nice ones, but not small enough for these shelves (and it's too far to go and get them!!)

I'll try later and see how I get on :D :D

Rather than move the brackets up, cut a strip off the bottom of the upright part so the shelf will fit in. Yambo's 7mm hole is a good solution too.

Ummm. That is a nice idea - not sure how I can use a hacksaw in the space though, especially left handed. But I'll have a proper look tomorrow :D

I'm going to do it all tomorrow, so considering moving the lower brackets down and when drilling the new holes making them at a bit of an angle so it is easier to get the screw into the top hole!!

Maybe!

Nooooooo I've just got the second screw in that set of brackets!!

The bottom set are probably coming down anyway so I can make it so I can get the second screw in. Will decide tomorrow

I'd do what Yambo said - and in fact if anyone managed to see my hammer rack I've done exactly that there.

I have some brackets like that, I put the screw in most of the way with a long bit and when it got too tight used one of those small Z shaped screwdrivers that come with flat pack furniture.
