Musings on what bike next...

Full disclosure, I ain't buying anything for a while

I currently have 4 bikes, none of which are technically roadworthy.

- 1998 CBR600: Just needs tyres
- 1997 Speed Triple: Technically doesn't actually need anything beyond an MOT to make it 'legal', but it's off the road with plans to be a long term restoration.
- 1969 Triumph Bonneville. Loveable nightmare.
- 1965 Triumph 5TA. Ditto.

I actually ride a fair bit (or did) but that is/was 95% commuting and I of course use the CBR for it. The CBR600 is my 'Ford Mondeo' bike and if/when I get a new bike it'll be going. Due to a combination of circumstances I could potentially get something new this winter....budget wise, it's fairly open. I can afford a V4 Panigale but I'd struggle to justify it!

My criteria are pretty simple and also pretty open, but totally arbitrary.

- Probably not clip-ons. I find the CBR okay but I'd prefer sit up and beg.
- Sensible enough that I can commute if needed. I don't plan for it to be an every day thing, but Mrs. D and I are probably going to go down to 1 car since our employers are both making WFH a permanent thing.
- Fastish. 100bhp and upwards sort of territory, no upper limit.
- Modernish. I already have other old bikes.
- Makes me go "I like that".

So far the list of bikes I'd think about is:

- BMW R1200S (too clip-on?)
- BMW K1200/K1300R
- BMW R NineT
- More up to date Speed Tripe / Street Triple
- Tuono V4.

What else do you reckon? Pretty wide spread of performance and cost there

It's going to come down to looks and which brand you like, any modern naked bike over 100bhp will do what you want and go round corners better than you can.

Sadly the bike would have to reliably do 90 miles on a charge (45 mile commute) with a bit of wiggle room. Despite working for an EV company I can't charge at work

But the real answer is XSR 900

Weirdly I really don't "get" the XSR900....I can't work out what it's meant to be, which sounds odd I know.

I'm struggling with the same thing, I think I doomed myself with the CBR600 because it's so good at everything I don't seem to be able to justify buying anything just to be a bit more focussed in any direction. Every time I see a new bike that I sort of like I just think why bother, if I want to go out riding I've got the CBR.

If I didn't have the two strokes and an old classic then those would be obvious choices, but I do.

The new Husqvarna adventure bike looks interesting.
I'd probably have bought a Guzzi V85TT if they were available here but now after watching reviews I'm glad I didn't because I'd get bored with it.
I fancy a Z900RS and then do an AC Sanctuary job on it, but I'd probably get bored because big four strokes were never my thing.
I don't want another middle of the road 'Mondeo' bike because...well...the CBR.
I'm too short for a fancy adventure bike and other than the initial "Ooh" when I pick it up I don't actually want one.
The V4 naked Ducati is just ridiculous, a Panigale even more so.
Etc.

I'm looking at the replies here for inspiration too, but I'm not hopeful.

I really really like the Energica Eva super naked electric bike that I posted a while back...but at £22k it would sting, more than that - the depreciation would be chronic. That applies to all brand new bikes though, it jsut seems more painful on a 20 grand one.

I never liked the R1200S, I found it combined the worst aspects of a sports bike and a sports tourer without the benefits of either.

You probably won't like this but what about a R1200GS? (Or similar - a Africa Twin perhaps). I think I'd go for something along those lines.

Nah I like the GS...they're maybe a bit Ewan and Charlie, but if I like the R NineT I can hardly moan about being too obviously trendy.

My mate has a new Africa Twin which I quite ilke, he also takes it Green Laning which is something I could see myself getting into.

The parallel twin GS might be worth a thought also if you might take it off road.

This will be heavily influenced by how 2021 goes in biking for me.

FOr the last few years I've ridden quite a bit, but it's always been commuting during rush hour pretty much. I have a 3 year old child so I don't get much free time for just bikes - Mrs. D doesn't ride and has no real interest in them, so it's not a family activity for us!

My new hours and new job mean a) I don't have to commute nearly as much and b) I get a lot more free time, particularly now that I can finish early on Fridays and I'm already at home. So I intend to make more effort to ride for the sake of riding and do some trackdays.

If that actually pans out I'll be much more likely to spunk cash on a bike.

The full fat version is quite pricey though.
I like them (although too tall for me I think) but after more than a few seconds of consideration I always think it's a lot to spend on something to use as a fun bike.

Keep the 2 old Triumphs, sell the others.

Don't buy a boring Dull BMW, do buy a V4 tuono or 1290SD

Is it going to be a keeper? If so I'd incline toward the less common such as the RnineT.
