Initially the Tory government decided to deliberately allow the virus to spread like wildfire through the population, but just as the first wave was receding, they decided to spend a whopping £849 million bribing people into eating at restaurants; ignored teachers' and parents' concerns to force kids back into schools; withdrew financial support measures; and even issued threats to intimidate people into quitting home-working to go back to commutes and inner city offices.
Their ludicrous behaviour from August up until the post-Christmas lockdown looks an awful lot like they actively wanted to deliberately create an even deadlier second wave doesn't it?
Instead of taking the virus seriously, they used the chaos as an excuse to siphon literally £billions in public funds to their mates, with parasitical outsourcing corporations, Tory party donors, city spivs, dormant shell companies with no employees, and blatant tax-dodging operations all walking away with lucrative no-bid contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
And who, with even the most rudimentary knowledge of UK politics, couldn't have predicted that Boris Johnson and his cabinet of far-right ghouls would prioritise this kind of profiteering at the public expense, over the protecting the lives of tens of thousands of elderly, vulnerable, and disabled people?
Who couldn't have predicted that the Tory response to the crisis would absolutely exemplify their venal and corrupt "profit above people" mentality?

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Oops.
Priti Patel says the UK should have closed its borders in March 2020 in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
In a video call obtained by Guido Fawkes, the home secretary told Tory supporters she was an "advocate" of closing the borders 10 months ago.
Can that be construed as a political attack?

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
It wasn’t a political post. You’ve construed it as such- but that’s your choice. There is concern about the new variant and we do have the highest deaths per dead people dying of death due to Covid.Mussels wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 10:08 am I'm not surprised we have the highest death rate in Doccs's carefully chosen snapshot in time. A new strain appeared here and spread very fast around Christmas so we're probably around the peak death rate and in a couple of weeks we'll be below several other countries.
If he was posting it to show we need to be careful and isolate because it is a big problem then fair enough, if his intention was Tory bashing then he knew it was very weak but a good social media meme.
It’s easy to bash the NHS. My own mum is being sent home in about an hour ( nearly 10pm) to an empty house with no carers because they need the bed ( she has Covid now btw). I could blame the NHS or I could blame the gross under resourcing of health and social care.
Plus, wratty, your observation of the NHS being shit because we’re in this position simply doesn’t measure apples with apples. It’s not comparing acuity and deterioration once admitted.
However, the more you admit the more will die.
I was part of our vaccination clinic today. 12 hours as a shit nurse in the shit NHS with only a 10 minute break during vaccinating people. I managed to give >80 people their first vaccine ( pfizer). Vaccination targets are being hit because it’s being overseen and managed by the NHS. Test and trace flopped because it was outsourced to expensive consultants who got 17yo’s in their bedroom to put a shift in.

Tbh Docca - that was my point about the stats / none of them are comparing apples for apples.

So would you say it makes economic sense to have someone at mega-expensive director level performing a HCA role?Docca wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:16 pm If he was posting it to show we need to be careful and isolate because it is

I posted in "the other place” about the widely varying counting methods used in each country and I really can't be arsed to go through it again.

Sounds like they had one and a half shifts out of him and failed to give him obligatory breaks. Who should he report it to?wheelnut wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:55 pmSo would you say it makes economic sense to have someone at mega-expensive director level performing a HCA role?Docca wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:16 pm I was part of our vaccination clinic today. 12 hours as a shit nurse in the shit NHS with only a 10 minute break during vaccinating people. BBC 2 hrs ago:
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned there will be "tough weeks to come" as the UK reported another all-time high of daily coronavirus deaths.
A further 1,820 people have died within 28 days of a positive Covid test, according to government figures.
Pretty much aligns with what Docca posted yesterday ("buckle up", etc), doesn't it?

* we are down %40 staff down due to Covid/ self isolating. 80% in some of our wards.wheelnut wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:55 pmSo would you say it makes economic sense to have someone at mega-expensive director level performing a HCA role?Docca wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:16 pm If he was posting it to show we need to be careful and isolate because it is

* we are doing 14 hour clinics, looking to ramp up to 24/7
* none of that other super important stuff isn’t as important as what we are living through right now. This is the biggest thing we will have done i our lifetimes
*i’ve lost and miss 2 colleagues to this virus and want to do my bit
* I don’t cost £1000/day.
As for stats; look at capacity of hospitals ( Covid adjusted for distancing etc). The UK isn’t doing well no matter how you slice it.

It wasn’t a criticism, more an observation that the last thing we are getting out of this whole situation is value for money. It is what it is. We just need to get through it.Docca wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 11:02 pm * we are down %40 staff down due to Covid/ self isolating. 80% in some of our wards.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Just found out that the old fogies home my dad is in (Plymouth) has had a major Covid outbreak & he's the only inmate who is still testing negative. He's been stuck in his room for 2 1/2 weeks.
Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Fingers crossed for him. Have you suggested he takes vitamin D supplements? (He should).

For the past 20 years or so before he went into the home his daily diet was pretty much 3 bottles of wine & a sandwich. We were thinking the booze would end him, but it looks like he is sufficiently pickled for Covid immunity & may save him.

The line for this year is still rising as well as being considerably higher than normal judging by its trajectory.
