slide in steel bar for garage doors

Right after what happened to the out house, I want to add a little security to my garage.

I was looking at a slide in steel bar to go across the door, they are wooden and open outwards,

and 2 extra brackets for the centre's of the doors,

I feel visually they are a good, I know if they really want to get in they will, the garage is alarmed, but id like to make it more agro for them, the person that tried the out house had a quick try and buggered off, police come this morning as I reported it last night and said most people look for something easy and try then move on, hoping this bar could make it too much for the average burglar.

Make it noisy and awkward but try not to make it look like you’ve got the Crown Jewels stored in there.

I'd say the centre brackets are essential, maybe not for security but ease of use. Without them the bar can get horribly close to biting your fingers badly.

Maybe put a flat runner on the extraction side to stop the bar dropping too.

also as it come with M8 coach bolts will a 8.2mm drill bit for wood be ok???

I was thinking it being beside the door so as you pull the bar out from the brackets on the door the bent over end rests on it. The bar will be heavier than you expect and they are annoying unbalanced when being extracted. My first spawn had one on their shed in Crawley.

oh that makes sense, so a block for the end to rest on, makes sense.

8mm will do, and then tap gently through with a hammer.

Do you think they saw anything valuable during the last attempt? If they did they are likely to be more determined next time.
They are also likely to be one of your neighbours so don't make it obvious when you are out.

There is nothing in the outhouse they tried to get in, you can see some chocolate, old boots, garden chairs and some baking bits

Assuming your meaning M8 machine thread on the coach bolts then 8.2 mm will be fine.
Theres usually a domed head which should always go to the burgler side, thats so they can't get a grip on it with a spanner.
Its usually got a square section under the domed head which stops it from rotating when you tighten the nut on the other (nside the shed) end.

when you say fine, should I go 8 or 9, how do you work out the correct size???

Well, if I was drilling the hole I'd use an 8.5mm but thats cos my drill index (box of bits) goes up in half mm sizes and its the next size up from 8mm that I have.
Its better being slightly bigger than the thread size.
If you have 8.2 thats fine, if it sticks in the hole slightly on the way through, give the domed end a tap with a hammer. Thats with dome headed coach bolts that have a machine thread.

If you were using coach screws however, they have a big woodscrew thread and dont have a nut to fix to the other end the hole needs to be about the size of the root of the thread.

If the bolt has a nut on the end and the thread doesn't grip the wood then I'd make a 9mm hole to allow for the hole being slightly out.
