Opinion on Vloggers/Bloggers/Influencers...
Now this may or may not cause a storm in a tea cup and it is not aimed at anybody here. But my question is, what are your opinions on them in general.
I ask because I have been trying to help a Vlogger, to no avail. He has a large following and produces some aesthetically pleasing videos, my drama is the technical subjects he has composed are full of inaccuracies on some quite deep technical subjects. He was also a previous customer of mine, so I know what technical understanding he has which is not what is protrayed in his videos!
Some of his information actually orders on unsafe.
On the other hand a friend of mine runs a blog site and he is the total opposite but he does not influence, just wants to get into journalism and has had every door shut to him by some pretty big names just because his face did not fit.
I have never understood why people would want to spend so much time to publicise themselves if they were not an industry professional.

Once you have following then advertisers will pay you to promote their products/allow their adverts on your social media. People can make a decent income from it just by making video content and the more that click/subscribe the more profit there can beSSR Suspension wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 9:56 pm

Taylor Mackenzie has openly discussed it on his you tube channel as a way he hopes to raise some budget towards his next seasons racing

You'd be surprised how much influencers can make. Enough hits, enough YouTube, next thing you've got money, merchandise, goods being thrown at you left right and center.
I don't watch many if I'm honest, but others I know watch tonnes.
I do use YouTube when thinking of a new bike etc, but not a particular person.
Don't see why this would be a contentious thread. Crack on.
Take a guess how rich the top 5 YouTubers are.
Ryan Kaji: $26 million. Ryan Kaji, 9, has been dubbed by Forbes as the highest-earning YouTuber of 2019, with a reported estimated income of $26 million. After launching his video career in 2015, Ryan has expanded his brand to include merchandise, and even his own Nickelodeon series, Ryan's Mystery Playdate

Re: Opinion on Vloggers/Bloggers/Influencers...
There are many rider training web sites and YouTube videos which are easy to understand - if you know what they're on about and can separate fact from false.
It's the joy of social media, etc., that anyone with internet access, a phone or GoPro can generate content, then make it public.
After that it could be little more than luck who gets the attention. That's not new. A friend was an opera singer, Covent Garden, etc, (including with a bloke called Domingo), had music written for her, etc. But. Someone once told her, bluntly but honestly, that she didn't have 'it', would never be a star.

I'm not even sure what they are,so if I've been influenced it's been accidentally.

I follow SNAFU and ComNavOps for an understanding of the US military and an alternative view of the US. SNAFU I can find hard to follow as some of his commenters are to the far right of the Nazis but it gives an insight into the thinking of the right wing. ComNavOps isn't political but is a hot needle of inquiry into the US Navy and it's dire state of readiness against a peer competitor (aka China). He picks through the manufacturers and Navy PR BS very well (he's not a fan of the F-35, the Ford Carriers and the LCS).
I also follow Tracksterman on Tumblr who is a MTBer who did bike packing way before a thing. His tales of riding across China are amazing and sometimes horrifying. He saw first hand the Uighers plight against the Han way before the worlds press realised what was going on.

It is still publishing and controlled by YouTube/Google. Those “opinions” are then advertised via Instagram/FaceBook/Twitter. We all know this but few of us bother about it or bother with it.
So what you see is what those few who control big tech “allow” on their channels. This is deeply dangerous for society because while we may believe we have free speech, fact is, our speech is controlled along with the opinions of an equally biased “mainstream” media. I say “mainstream” in quotes because they no longer are the principle source for news. They reflect opinion and those opinions must align with big tech.
When was the last time you heard from someone who has been silenced? This has lead to some extraordinary world events. The phenomena of “influencers” is a new thing. Whether it turns out to be a good thing or not, time will tell.

I've heard the names, but no idea really what they are. I don't seem to have lost out. IMHO.

I've got a few I follow mostly motorbike .
Ones gone from a grotty lock up to a much more pro set up (it's all relative).Harder work than it looks
In terms of getting things wrong -I was reading a music review in the Grauniad yesterday the well respected critic got couple of fairly basic things wrong maybe he was having a bad day.

Ah, this is one of those philosophicexistential questions, like "If a Vlogger falls over in a forest, but doesn't upload the video, does anyone know?"

They're advertising stuff - same as motorcycle magazines, take what they say with a pinch of salt, if they're anything like motorcycle journalists most of them won't be able to ride a bike for toffee and will be repeating what they've been told by someone else.

{old man mode on}
It's the younger generation that will suffer at the hands of these vloggers etc. They have grown up with these videos and believe what they see.
Cynical older people will see through the BS
{old man mode off}
In a similar vein, I tried to watch some utube last night of a guy converting a VW bus to electric motor. Despite being interested in the subject, I couldn't watch it all for two reasons.
1 Fake drama. To summarise, the guy took his VW to a specialist with plenty of experience in converting old VW's. They then proceeded to try and 'figure out' how they were going to fit everything, see if they could 'squeeze in' x amount of batteries. "Our" guy even drove a ready converted bus and walked us around a couple that were in the process of being converted !!
2 The main guy was a bit of a bellend, not just because he was angle grinding with his shirt off, but that really didn't help his case.

I avoid them for anything technical, there's usally ten minutes of ads and rubbish for possibly 30 seconds of useful information. A waste of time and I'd rather skim read something to see if it's useful.
I only subscribe to one channel (Bad Obsession Motorsport) who unlike most seem to put out good stuff almost every time.

Mrs D has an Instagram channel/page/account (dunno what the right term is ) where she posts her running stories.
She has a few thousand followers now and she gets all kinds of free running stuff. She works in marketing for a living anyway, so she's knows the tricks and rules and she is meticulous about putting #Ad etc.
She has no illusions of being a celebrity or inflated sense of her own worth. Its just a nice little side earner.

Re: Opinion on Vloggers/Bloggers/Influencers...
Like all media, it has an axe to grind. I read it, then read an alternative view (or several), and then make my mind up.
A few are quite good, many are dross, some are just plain weird/daft/even dangerous.

Re: Opinion on Vloggers/Bloggers/Influencers...
I watch a few Youtube channels. 44 Teeth, Car Throttle, LambChop, Missenden Flyer, some of the US mags etc. Can't really say I'm influenced by them. Most are given a bike by a bike shop to test and lets be honest they aren't gonna say it's rubbish. But at the same time if there is a certain bike I'm interested in IE Tracer, XSR, Z900 then I'll watch their vids on it. I wouldn't take what they say as gospel but their views have a place which is fine I think unless you are really gullible but then that works everywhere.
