Was just talking to my SDad and talking coffee - and talked about one of my really big childhood memories. Whenever we went to Bath shopping (not every week/month but often enough for this to be sealed in my memory) there was a coffee place we walked past and I used to walk really slowly as LOVED the smell. Coffee roasting or being ground or just smelling a hot coffee if we ever went in there. He has a similar childhood memory from Watford!! LOL


Anyway

Only tried two coffees this afternoon/evening -

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
OMG it smells sooooo good - pre water and after water!!!
A little bit bitter black. But the milk didn't make it taste nicer. Will try black with sugar tomorrow

Monsoon Malabar
Yup, this one smells as good as the first, but -
Black with sugar - damn that's good.
This time I think I made it too weak so need to try again with a bit more oomph, but damn I like this one!!!
Now I've had it a little stronger this is gurt lush - black with a smidge of sugar!! Woohoo

Can't try any more tonight as really should try and sleep!! LOL But looking forward to trying another in the morning :D :D

Colombo Supreme
Lush taste but a bit of a bitter after taste to me. I guess this is the acidic bit that I've read in the descriptions? But it's really nice. Again, black with a hint of sugar. Weird that coffee is better black (to me!! LOL)


Honduras Marie Melva
This is the one I had ordered to try and it's good!! I'm still drinking it black but with a bit of sugar :)



I think all of them have a slight aftertaste to me, but so does any alcohol, so maybe it's something about me?! (A friend did once tell me that I could be a really good wine person if I learnt how - because I get the aftertaste and so probably more of the first taste, I just don't know how to describe it!!)

And on that note - I don't know how to describe the coffees. When I drink them I try and taste the flavours described, but I can't 'find' "stewed green apple, vanilla and brown sugar with a creamy pannacota"!! So they are good or not good! The main thing is how bitter they are or how strong the aftertaste is

But I do taste the differences between the coffees I've had. Maybe I'll go see Viv and get him to give me a lesson in taste/flavours!! LOL

My favourite of the four is Monsoon Malabar :D But I could drink any of these. Weirdly (to me) the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe has the strongest smell from the ground coffee over the four but is the last one I'd choose to drink - I like it but it is a bit more bitter than the others (I think!!) :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I also have the original coffee I got from elsewhere to try again and maybe finish!!

My sugar to coffee ratio is slightly higher than my sugar to tea ratio - but my coffee intake is way lower (mainly cos the tea is decaf, so I can't drink anywhere near as much coffee!! LOL)


Thank you so so much to WR for sending these to me. I do have a goal to find a 'small' cafetiere next time I go to the valley - making two esspresso cupfuls in an 8 person cafetiere is a bit daft!! LOL :lol: :lol: :lol:

Try a little Mokka pot... like this or similar. You'll get a size to suit

Is that one that you 'cook' on the hob?

And actually, if John Lewis ships to France, that could be just right - 330ml. Not sure red is quite right, but it's cheap!! LOL


Trying to avoid too much that needs the hob as I lean the hob against the wall for most of the time and only pull it down when cooking something I can't do in the IP!! :D

The 1~2 cup Moka pots only need about a heaped tablespoon and produce remarkably good coffee

Tip: if you get a litle Moka, fill it with boiling water to start with. Watch it and as soon as it finished bubbling pour immediately, dont let is stand on th ehob. That way it doesn't overcook the coffee and make it bitter

Different brew - Transforms the coffee imho. Cafetieres come out watery in comparison.

Another alternative for espresso specifically, is a Nanopresso, but with your arm that might be problematic. They are good though.

They look interesting but the biggest thing at the mo is cost!! LOL

Its looking like the cheapest option is a mat that makes the little Moka I have work on the induction plate!! That's 15€. Whereas all the little pots for induction plates are over 25€ :o

so I best have another look for the mats!! LOL

Bitterness as said comes from three main places - over roasting (I don't :p) or too long to extract the coffee/stewed coffee and most common, overly hot water.

Wait for the water to calm down from the kettle before pouring it on the coffee
Make sure it doesn't sit too long :D
