Basildon & Southend hospitals are bursting with covid patients from all over. So I guess once the Hospitals are full, the new c19 patients will have to go somewhere else or we'll be throwing out our dead. Glad i don't have to find an answer to where to put them, but if I was charged with doing that, i'd put them in the Nightingales and recruit anti-vaxxers to look after them and help them prove their point!wheelnut wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 11:25 amI suppose the other option is to stack them up in an Essex car park?Wreckless Rat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 11:14 am Its become the CHS - COVID health service. Plus it’s not like they’ll be in the local McDonald’s - they’ll be in a hospital ward.

They use staff in normal hospitals- and it removes the ability to serve normal illness, so to me it makes more sense to put some staff in the nightingales and keep the main NHS running. Cancer et al haven’t taken a holiday because covid is here, and every time they populate a normal hospital with covid patients - just about everything else stops.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Similar here. Although in this Christmas Holiday period I am mostly staying in because there are too many random tourists walking around without a mask
I've I go for a walk on the mountain or even down the road (at a time when other people are not around) then I won't put the mask fully on. There is no one around. But if I'm in the resort area with loads of grockles and locals, I wear the mask at all times. It's pissing me off a bit that so many aren't bothering. Most of the not bothered will leave in a couple of days. How many will have brought the virus with them? And will be leaving it behind?

They are not trained to work in ICU mate. It’s a specialist skill. That said, places are pretty much desperate and lobbing whoever they can at the influx. Our Covid wards are staffed by a Merry mix of non-respiratory specialists because we are desperate. Nightingales: it’s not recruitment, it’s the existence of people to work in these hospitals or indeed any. The realisation that the Army can build something in six days but it will take 4 years to train people who aren’t applying to train to work there didn’t land.
I’m not going to do the multiple quote thing because TBH I CBA but some additional thoughts on what’s been said:
I don’t think Mick636 was being harsh about his view of frontline staff not being jabbed but the elderly being jabbed first. I think he was suggesting that the frontline staff are more likely to come in to contact with thousands more people (increasing risk and likely chance of infecting others).
I think Slowsiders point about leadership is also spot on. This government is incompetent and before anyone asks what I’d do differently- I’d like to think there are better people than me who can lead this country. I’d perhaps start with banning cronyism and not handing out mates 12bn£ for nothing. Plus all the rest ( put that in context of testing 1500 lorry drivers...). I’d also try and influence smashing up the ruling Eton elite and generations of hand-me-down safe seats in parliament. I’d also see if New Zealand can lend us their PM for a year.
I also agree with Iccys point about the great unwashed and sense of entitlement. Look at who they have as ‘influencers’ now though- it’s not strong parenting but social media and clowns like Paddy McGuinness’ wife taking a selfie whilst in hospital holding an 02 mask to her face.
You’re now 7x more likely to get c19 if you’re a health and care worker.
Anyways, I’d be giving the jab to the young first. They are the ones either flagrantly disregarding guidance the most or just at increase risk of spread given circumstances. 12m people in the UK are old- that’s a lot of vaccines to give when we could be raising the safety bar quicker by jagging the youth. Pensioners like papers though and politicians still need votes.

It’s not really a case of not being able to recruit them* - it’s more a case of there not being enough ICU trained nurses. Unfortunately you can’t just pull a nurse off the ward and point her towards a ventilated patient.
* although there still are 10s of thousands nursing vacancies at the moment.
Nurses now have a very long training period and a degree, should they not know how to perform in ICU?

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
That way does have its merits but if we jab those who are most likely to land in an ICU bed, ie the old, then the sooner the strain on NHS is eased. Also, as far as I’m aware the vaccine just stops the worst effects of the virus, and there’s no testing been done yet on whether the vaccine prevents transmission. If it doesn’t then the young should probably be the last to get it.Docca wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 11:53 am

No. Nursing is a wide career path, with many specialisms that are a career in themselves. IC nursing is one of them.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 12:07 pm Perhaps the question should be "Why not?"

There’s even specialisms within IC nursing, wife’s is cardiac , and although she’d take to general ICU more quickly than most it would still be a learning curve.

Isn't that bit like asking a GP to perform surgery?
I asked my surgeon a question about some soreness on the skin of my arm (pre second op) - her response was "you need to see a dermatologist"
Skills aren't always transferable and ICU nursing is pretty specialist

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
So if hospitals are all about covid and not doing their normal stuff, what are the rest of the staff doing?
Re Essex covid cases, its not looking good here at all!
A MAJOR incident has been declared for the whole of Essex due to the strain coronavirus is putting on the county's health services.
On Tuesday the number of patients in Essex receiving treatment for coronavirus exceeded those seen at the peak of the first wave of the virus in the spring.
In response to the massive growth in demand on hospitals, particularly in mid and south Essex, the Essex Resilience Forum (ERF) has declared a "major incident".
This means the county can seek further financial support from the Government in a bid to help ease the pressure on the NHS.
The ERF, which consists of the NHS, blue light responders and local authorities, says pressures are being felt primarily in NHS and local authority services and are associated with critical care and bed capacity, staff sickness or self-isolation levels and the system’s ability to discharge patients quickly into safe environments.
The ERF is predicting these patient levels will increase further in the coming days and is even looking at sending patients out of county to hospitals where there is further capacity.
Anthony McKeever, executive lead for Mid and South Essex Health and Care Partnership, said: “We are taking every action possible within the NHS and across the wider health and social care partnerships in Essex to limit the impact on the NHS and the wider health system.
“This involves using critical care capacity elsewhere in Essex and the eastern region and identifying additional locations and capacity to assist with the discharging of patients to reduce pressure on hospitals.
“Our strong working relationships mean we are able to respond effectively to support our local communities.
“I would also like to pay tribute to all those hard-working colleagues who are working tirelessly to support our communities across the system.
"They are all doing an amazing job in extremely difficult circumstances.”
Chief Constable of Essex Police and Co-Chair of the Essex Local Resilience Forum BJ Harrington added: “Declaring a major incident enables us to seek further support from the Government to address the severe pressures which the health system is under because of Covid-19.
“The people of Essex have been magnificent and are only dialling 999 or attending A&E in an emergency – we need this to continue because this will help protect the very limited capacity available at our hospitals.
"Please stay safe; work from home if possible, follow the social distancing rules, and only travel if absolutely necessary.”

Believe it or not, people still have accidents, heart attacks and illnesses requiring hospitalisation during a pandemic. Inconsiderate of them isn't it?

When I was in for pre-op checks, in early July staff were talking about having been returned to their usual wards / areas.
That was Southampton. I also heard that (during the early wave) all elective surgery undertaken was off the main site into the nearby Spire private hospital.

I'm confused as to why all hospital staff cannot have their vaccine whilst on their shift. Doesn't take 2 minutes. They could go back to their ward and if there's a reaction, their in the right place.
Surely it makes sense to protect those who protect us. We should be doing everything we can, to keep the doctors and nurse's in their place of work.
Look at it this way, if there was only 250000 jabs up for grabs in the next 12 months, who would you want them to go to. ??

Risk planning may not like the idea of giving the same batch of vaccine to a whole hospital staff at the same time.Dodgy knees wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 6:08 pm I'm confused as to why all hospital staff cannot have their vaccine whilst on their shift. No word of a lie, I was working in the plant room of a hotel in the lakes recently and the plumber who was working on the boiler and manifolded system was going on about the vaccine having tracking chips in it.
I said I wasn't confident in his ability to safely work on the heating system.
