WiFi / Fibre speeds ??

Post by Noggin »

Hopefully setting up fibre for home tomorrow (the line is here, just need it activated - no idea how long they'll take though!!)

Anyway - the option I think I want is cheaper than I'm paying for a 4G blob (I know, should have sorted this before  ) and I get the option of an app to watch French TV :)

I do not understands speeds n stuff on internet descriptions, so, is this reasonable?

Up to 2 Gbs/s downloading and 900 mb/s the other way (can't translate the words but I understand what it means!!)

(Fibre combined with phone as a current WiFi customer is a good saving, and I can only do it because the mobile package offers calls and internet in Switzerland - not all mobile companies here do offer that :( )

They are very good speeds but 'up to' is worrying. If it's fibre to your house (probably with those speeds) then it's most likely reliable.
Fibre to the cabinet that was normal in the UK for many years was always sold as up to 60Mb but was often much lower, I don't know how honest they need to be in France with their marketing claims.

That'll be fine, I WFH 5 days a week and have 2 wimmin in the house and am happy with 36 mbs download speed.

To the house for sure. The cheapest option is 1Gb but it was a couple of €s more to get 2G plus the free tv stuff - given how much its saving on the wifi blob, I figured it wouldn't hurt :angelic-green:

See, this is why I asked - to me 36mbs sounds like it would take forever to watch a tv show!!!

You can't download a film in seconds but it keeps up with playback as it chugs along

I've no broadband, sim router with a now, smarty sim card, 200gb for £15 on a monthly. Speed test approx 10mbps download and maybe 18 upload, result says fine. Sounds slow but that is quick enough to stream films on firestick without issue.

Just 2 of us and no gaming.

They do have a deal at the mo for a 5G wifi box, but, although I know it should be better then what I have (although I thought that was 5G but the box says 4 :( ) some things do buffer quite a bit - not all phone signal is particularly good here :(

So I figure fibre is the way to go

But again, really interesting that 10mbps is enough to stream stuff :)

Once you can use fibre to premises internet speed limitations ( at least in the UK) are just a means of having a charging scale rather than a technical limitation. When it reaches your own home network external fibre speeds can broadly match ethernet speeds for wired networks. Wireless speeds are of course much slower and dependant on distance from router and building topology etc. Although it seems like overkill I predict that fibre home networks will eventually become more popular; that is unless some new miracle wireless technology appears.
