Hmm
Ranking team 4 playing ranking team 64
They're not the whipping boys that were expected.

Re: World Cup
Game was dull as dishwater.
I'm not into 'the beautiful game' and from what I endured last night I think I'll applaud my life choices in that respect.
Is there nothing they can do in terms of rules and regs to stop a team simply staying in their own half and going for a 0-0 draw? If I'd paid to see that I would be asking for a refund.

For these lower terms to play a big name like England and not get beaten, is a big result for them.gremlin wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2026 10:21 am Game was dull as dishwater.

Re: World Cup
Clearly, but as a result it makes the game tedious to watch. Talking to mate who knows more about the game than I do, it's a common tactic in league matches. Shit for the fans, but then, since when did FIFA care about the fans?*Yorick wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2026 10:59 amFor these lower terms to play a big name like England and not get beaten, is a big result for them.gremlin wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2026 10:21 am Game was dull as dishwater.

*Since were there four quarters in a footie match?

Re: World Cup
Read an article that said 'It's not just about the trophy, there are other accolades to be competed for'.
The Cinderella Trophy
- plucky little underdogs that go further than expected and gain a few million fans.
Tournament Clowns Trophy
- team that expects to stroll to victory only to be embarrassingly poor. England have their name engraved on it a few times. (It was called 'It's the hope that kills you, not the disappointment - vase').
Team Villain - once upon a time Germany were a shoe-in. ('A World Cup without Germany would have been like Star Wars without Darth Vader once upon a time'). South American sides are strong in this category too.
Individual Villain - 'The Golden Boo' (I made that one up
). Hand of God, biting, getting fancy with a crucial penalty and missing etc.

Re: World Cup
Media forced to admit that the fans love the US, the people & the stadiums. Fans blathering away saying how they believed the crap the media spewed about the US for years & now realize they were lied to.
My step-dad was the same way, hated yanks, never wanted to visit, then once he did you couldn't keep him away.

Re: World Cup
I've enjoyed my visit to the US, I was fortunate to have time and money in 2017 and spent 3 months cycling from Banff to Mexico. The people I met were fantastic, my trip exceeded any expectations I had. I wouldn't want to live there though, it's so fucked up it's staggering.ZRX61 wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2026 4:05 pm Media forced to admit that the fans love the US, the people & the stadiums. Remember, when you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others. The same applies when you are American.
