'83 GPz750-A1 malarkey.

Plan for the weekend is fit one set of rails to the GPz11...& maybe assemble the carbs depending on how hard the paint is.

Started carb assembly today, ended up raiding the spare set for the floats, a couple of the caps & some hardware.

Two new key blanks arrived & another fuel tap just so I could use the plastic filter doodad from it.

Tomorrow:
Decided to paint the mounting rails & some other bits with Steel-It instead of the gloss black epoxy. Going to use that stuff on the rear brake lever too.

Emptied out the tumbler this morning to see if I missed any parts in there... it's like picking fly shit out of pepper. The media is 8mm stainless steel pins

Threw another load in there for 3 hours.

Carb rails & brake lever got the Steel-It treatment this morning. Lever looking spiffy... other bits just got turned over & painted on the other side, so they still sitting in the Sun

Have to be a bit quick with this paint as it comes out of the rattle can like a frigging fire hose.

Never heard of Steel-It, but that looks like a nice finish.

Rear brake pivot doodad also just got the Steel-It treatment, currently hanging on a piece of welding wire outside in the sun.

Finished the tumbling...well, for now. They'll be more hardware from the fairing, front fender, footpeg mounts etc when those parts get pulled off the bike.

There's duplicates in this pile as some parts are from the spare set of carbs. Ferinstance, the thicker idle screw is from the original carbs & the thinner one is from the spare set, as are a lot of the screws.

It comes out the rattlecan so frigging fast you'd think there's going to be runs, ripples & orange peel etc, but it smooths out perfectly. It's not exactly cheap, a rattle can of this stuff was $41. But that one can has done a some GPz750 parts, the brake plates, rear axle & pumpkin on the F350 & there's still plenty left in the can.

Front footpeg mounts got Steel-It...Shift lever gubbins will get the same as it's kinda rusty & tatty looking.

In other news: Found my silicon O-ring lube goop so can assemble the carb rack.

Visited the bike, bought home the exhaust, l/h foot peg bracket doodad, front fender & what's left of the fairing.

So now I have a choice of eight foot pegs to choose from.

HUUUGE progress today....

Dropped off the seized gas cap at the local locksmith along with two new key blanks & one of the keys from the GPz11 that fits the other three locks on the GPz750...

He calls me a while later & tells me he got the gas cap lock working, but the GPz11 key was different to the 750 gas cap lock & he cut two new keys from blanks he had. WooT!!

So I drive over there & pay him $15, which is basically what he would have charged just for two new keys.

I get home & assemble the gas cap. Then I tried the GPz11 key in the now working 750 gas cap.. & it worked, even though it looks different to the two new keys he cut. Walked over to the GPz11 & the new keys for the 750 don't work in the 1100 ignition or the gas cap.
So now I have two new keys for the 750 gas cap & three keys from the GPz11 that fit all 4 locks on the 1100 & 3 of the 4 on the 750.. & still have two unused blanks.

AND... Between the ultrasonic, a sharp pick thingie & Evaporust I got enough snarge out of the two rear brake mastercylinders that I can now rebuild both... altho I still need to get the remains of the seized bolt out of the original m/c from the 750.

Yay! Found a new rear brake rotor for $38.
Fronts are still an issue, they're 270mm dia. The GPz11 & GPz750 Turbo use 280mm rotors & there are various options for those.
and the GPz11 uses longer forks, but same dia as the 750.... So one possibility is using 750 stanchions with 1100 lowers or turbo forks... another frigging ballache.

The difference is the U shaped front caliper holder/bracket doodad & I can just swap that part to make the calipers line up with the larger rotors... which I can suss out by comparing the GPz750 part with the ones on my GPz11.


but that seems too simple.

Called APE Racing in Rosamond to see if I can just drop by to pick up the intake manifold doodads & pods... as paying $32 for shipping just the pods about 14 miles seems a tad excessive.

K&N pods: $190 to $240 (?!!) for 4, crap, fall off all the time owing to shit design.
APE pods: $65 for 4, great design, never fall off & damn near have to be pried off to remove them.
