I watch all the UK TV channels and when they show public scenes, less than half are wearing masks. That tells a story.
Mask wearing here is 100%. And the police are strict. Nobody wants a police state, but I do want to stay alive.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but gov.uk says that there are about 120,000 NHS beds of which about 20,000 are ICU beds.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:03 pmOk, but if the figures are believed, there's still a huge number of people taking up the beds, so the numbers of sick has also gone up dramatically?
The latest published statistics state that in England there are about 22,000 people in hospital with Covid-19. In contrast to the "first wave" in spring, the number of Covid-19 ICU bed occupants is not identified. So how many of these 22,000 are occupying the ICU specific beds?
Hmmm.

The new strain is a strange one, or maybe a cunning, nay intelligent one? My Step Mother has dementia, is so frail she cannot weight bear and has a fibrosis on her lung to boot. She has the new strain of covid, yet suffers no symptoms whatsoever. The Staff Nurse on her ward told me its how they often see this new strain i.e. it either takes someone down quickly, or not at all.
It messes with my head how a virus can mutate to yet another form and find more ways to both kill and propagate! It literally is like something out of a horror novel!

In the UK their aren't enough police left to enforce real laws, much less Covid regulations. And far too many people are concerned about their RIGHTS, but somehow never manage to remember their RESPONSIBILITIES.

But does this suggest that the new strain is less deadly. Maybe the old one may have killed her ?Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:34 pm The new strain is a strange one, or maybe a cunning, nay intelligent one? How did the nurse know it was the new strain? AFAIW, it’s not readily decipherable from the PCR test?Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:34 pm The new strain is a strange one, or maybe a cunning, nay intelligent one? Does that include, do uou think, people getting the new variant twice in quick succession?

I thought it needed to be sequenced and they just extrapolated the percentages from the samples, but it appears I’m wrong and it does show up on the standard test in the form of a missing protein.

I have no idea, just recalled seeing that graphic, so searched for it. If you find a simple explanation I'd be interested to read it!

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
It took 5 days for a swab test result, so it clearly wasn't a lateral flow test, so I'd assume it was specifically to determine the variant?wheelnut wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:57 pmHow did the nurse know it was the new strain? Our ICUs are full of c19. One hospital has even tweeted asking for volunteers ( from the public) to help prone patients ( put them in their front).
The surge in urgent and crisis mental health is beyond breaking. We are really struggling. Particular surge in children’s eating disorders and people just going psychotic. I was on call the other night. No beds in England for adult MH services anywhere. Not a single bed.
I’m in wave 2 for the vaccine. I think that means week after next but we’ll see.
Someone ( clever) gave a great and detailed explanation of why new variant is more contagious and it had something to do with protein spike. I can’t find the link now though.
My family are largely adhering to the rules. Tend to go out every day for a dog walk otherwise it’s home bound. Stay safe everyone.

I would imagine the MH beds that are normally hard enough to find in normal times must be like rocking horse shit nowadays.Docca wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 12:01 am Our ICUs are full of c19. My missus is supposed to be in wave 1 for the vaccine but has yet to be given a date despite being told it would be before Christmas .
We are fortunate to live in a rural area near the coast so away from major population and limit ourselves to long walks or me going cycling on a road route or the dunes and off road. We have the youngest and his G/F now living with us for this lockdown and thankfully they get it and are not fucking off to visit their mates.
I get sent out to do shopping as rarely as needed when we cant get a delivery as the missus who is a senior care worker at a local home is trying really hard to limit her risk to the residents

Same here. 100% mask wearing, enforced by the police (which I am glad of).
Obviously Covid happens to other people.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
We had one here a few days ago, 37 nutter supposed to be in the secure psych ward, but he has Covid & they put him in a room with another Covid case.. an 82yo geezer. Geezer started to pray, nutter beat him to death with his oxygen tank.
The lawsuit from this is going to be spectacular, nutter was a County (no insurance) patient so LA County are on the hook for fucking up & putting him in a Covid room.
LANCASTER — The arraignment was rescheduled today to New Year’s Eve for a man accused of killing an 82-year-old fellow patient at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, where both men were being treated for COVID-19, by pummelling the victim with an oxygen tank as he was praying.
Jesse Martinez, 37, is charged with one count each of murder and elder or dependent adult abuse resulting in death, along with a hate crime allegation. He was unable to come to court for medical reasons and his arraignment was rescheduled for Dec. 31, according to a court clerk.
Martinez is presumably in quarantine for the virus and sheriff’s jail records indicate that he is being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility downtown in lieu of $1 million bail.
He could face up to 28 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The attack occurred about 9:45 a.m. Dec. 17, according to the sheriff’s department, which reported the two men did not know each other prior to being admitted to the hospital.
“(The victim) was housed in a two-person room inside the hospital with the suspect, who was also there receiving treatment,” according to a sheriff’s statement. “The suspect became upset when the victim started to pray. He then struck the victim with an oxygen tank.”
The victim, David Hernandez-Garcia, was a Lancaster resident, according to the coroner’s office.

Brace yourself for the surge in the next couple of weeks for the surge in infection from the Christmas and New Year get tobethers that people insisted on having.Docca wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 12:01 am Our ICUs are full of c19. The time for relying on the Great Unwashed to use 'common sense' and follow the rules as passed. It's time to bring out the big stick.

TBH i don't care how they do it and who is or isn't right, as long as it hopefully brings a little normality in the not too distant future. I'm one of the easiest going people out there and even I'm getting a little fed up with the doom and gloom day in day out. So throwing this in the pot along with Pfizer one too, can only be a good thing.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:52 amIt's sounding like they're gonna do the thing where we jab as many people as possible with dose 1 right now, rather than saving half the available doses to give later as doseweeksy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:12 am Well, maybe this helps a bit

Absolutely.
It feels like we just need to get through winter, which is what they've been saying for ages isn't it?
