My 750 ones were all in spec at 16000 miles, but it will depend how you ride it, lots of revs stretches the valves, ride it gently the valves will last forever.

On the basis I'm an old git now and it's hard to use all it's power anyway given traffic/roads, the valves will probably last forever. Part of me say's fuckit they'll be fine, the old man part of me says 'but what if you've got one of the 5% that needs adjusting'. To be fair the bike runs perfectly but then presumably unless loose which is the better option I wouldn't know either way.

On the other end of the spectrum,a mate has an old, rough Honda Blackbird with 'to the moon and back' mileage and the valves have never been done. The thing still flies btw.Supermofo wrote: Wed Apr 22, 2026 10:05 pmThat's the dilemma init, on the GSXS forum most are in spec and some leave em until 30k. But there is the odd one or 2 where the valves were out. I've heard if you are gonna miss one, make it the 2nd one if the first check is all good.Skub wrote: Wed Apr 22, 2026 9:47 pm My 10R valves were checked for the first time at 34k miles and still in spec.

Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
Yeah there are Gixxus on the bike specific forum with very high mileages and never been checked. Sounds like it's fairly rare for them to be out, possibly helped by the detune from the Gixxer.Skub wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 10:22 amOn the other end of the spectrum,a mate has an old, rough Honda Blackbird with 'to the moon and back' mileage and the valves have never been done. Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
When the valves get tight it will be difficult to start when it's hot, they should be adjusted before they get to that stage.Supermofo wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 8:48 am On the basis I'm an old git now and it's hard to use all it's power anyway given traffic/roads, the valves will probably last forever. Me, I'd get them checked, my Honda's need doing at 24,000 miles, which will be the end of this year, then I'll have to choose someone to do them, I don't trust my local Honda dealers to adjust a chain, never mind buckets and shims, so I'll probably take it to my local Suzuki / Kawasaki / KTM / CF Moto dealer, the Triumph place round the corner from me used to sell Hondas, but they're mechanics don't have a great reputation.

Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
I think I'm going to cos as I've got older I've become a worrier! And I'm keeping the bike so I want it tip top. The bigger question is as per your last part, who do I trust! Doesn't help it's hard to tell they've been done. MSG or wherever Tricky/Weeksy used to use sounds good but they are a fair shelp away as I'll probably need to leave the bike all day minimum if not overnight. St Neots Suzuki seem decent but are expensive. There are 2 local independents who I know of with a good rep, Raceways Stevenage and where I currently get my MOTs Bikers Realm in Welwyn. Decisions, decisions! Still won't be till very late this year, more likely early next.

Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
Best to use somewhere you trust, there's a lot that needs to come off just to get to the valves, radiator and fuel injection amongst a whole load of other stuff, when mine was done over £200 of the bill was gaskets

Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
Bugger, thought I'd sorted this back from Nov, but seems my oil filter isn't quite oil tight. Checked a few times after I tightened it and all was good so not checked in a while but had the bike on a paddock stand today, reached under and got this from the mating between filter/housing. Not wet as such, more moist (oh Matron). No drips or oil elsewhere, just around the gasket.

Tighten it a little more or give it up as a loss and just do another filter change. Maybe with the OE filter and the 2 full turns which would be farkin tight.

Or wipe it clean and see if it does it again, could be squeezed out when you tightened the filter

Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
I'd already decided to clean it all up and see what happened. Did 100 miles last Monday and nothing other than a thin line of dirt, did 200 miles this Sunday and again a thin black line dirt/dust but nothing moist/wet. So leaving it for now.

Re: GSXS 1000 - Mofo's Gixxus
Did pre-flight checks for Friday's trip to Wales. Tightened the chain
Job jobbed.
I've held off washing it, it's covered in flies and dust from Clarkson's farm and the last 800-1000 miles of riding. But if I wash it I know it'll rain, so I'm not in the hope that the weekends bright forecast holds good. If that's still the case on Thursday evening and it's not pissing down (it's forecast to) I might wash it, although the Mrs looked at it and said it looks a bit minging, but after 800 miles to Wales and back it'll look minging either way
. For that reason I'll lube the chain Thursday night and check tyre pressures. I did check the oil filter and again, nothing, so hopefully all good.
Routes are all routed, will pack tonight as in the office tomorrow and then hopefully a ruddy marvellous trip will be had.
Current day 1 will be A40 to Sennybridge, A4067 to Ystradgynlais, Black Mountain Road to Llangadog, A482 to Ystrad Aeron, then B4342 to New Quay for fish n chips. Back will B roads to Llandovery, A40 but then down the B4560.
Day 2 B4520 through the Chapels to Garth, B4358 to Newbridge on Wye, Rhayader, through the Elan Valley, then mountain road to Devil's Bridge and Aberystwyth. Back will be A44/A470 to Newtown, then down the A483 through Crossgates and back to the hotel.
Hopefully both decent rides. For the way up going to meet my Dad and a mate at On Yer Bike in Aylesbury and got a medium twisty route from there mainly on B roads to Wales.
Getting a bit excited now

He's going via Sennybridge, it has it's own climate, wet and miserable no matter what the rest of Wales is like, though I doubt he's visiting the FIBUA
