What software do you suggest, preferable free or cheap, no subscription services?

This isn't going to be very helpful because I can't remember the name, but there a Linux distro that has a ripper, track look up and eject function all packaged together.
You stick it on an old shitty computer and just keep putting a new CD in when the tray opens and it writes the flacs or whatever file type you like to a NAS on your network.
Once it's set up you can almost run it headless, just stick another CD in when the tray opens.

I used to use Asunder on Linux Mint, it might be the one KFB is referring to. I don't use it now as I have no device with a CD or DVD drive.

Audiograbber, the original and best. Used to be paid-for but now released for free (the creator reckons he's made enough from it so it's now free).

Exact Audio Copy (EAC). All my CDs have recently been converted to FLAC for streaming @ 44.1kHZ 16bit. The DB picked up loads of stuff I didn't expect it to including things like CDs I got free with copies of the NME back in mid-90s.

Will bear in it in mind for the next time.
I gave Nero a try and found to to be clunky in operation, so went back to windows media playing for ripping and MP3Tag for album / track identification, but even then I had stuff from guys like Hardy and The Dead South that nothing would identify
