£4000 road bike, what are you buying

Post by weeksy »

You've got £4000 for an all rounder, day to day duties.

What's the purchase?

Day to day duties? That'll be something really pretty to sit in my shed under a cover.

If I get anything else it's likely to have an air cooled Ducati engine, probably a Cagiva.

Once they'd fitted the looks and the brains there wasn't enough room for a personality.

There's only one Gran Canyon listed on Ebay and it's already been sold.

RB has me fairly convinced a Rockster would be a good shout. I even like the colour.

I have to accept the reality I'm turning into a BMW fanboi.

I've already got the beard.

This, and then the other 2 grand towards fixing whatever is wrong with it to make it so cheap.

Mebbe a three grand TDM 900 then spend a bit of cash making the lights worth knocking on.

The bikes are practical enough but the lights are utter gash in the corners with poor beam spread.

But since i already have one.....
I'd be watching for one of these at that price.

There's probably nothing wrong with it, he just can't sell it.

I REALLY want another TLs. I'm seriously wary of buying any second hand bike out here as I've seen what people do to them at race meets!!! (No sleep when you go for the weekend due to the constant rev limiter hitting and then blowing up of whatever blows when a bike is constantly on the rev limiter!!!)

BUT - the TLs (the old ones) are pretty cheap here if you can find one, and I have a friend who is basically a TLs specialist in the uk, so would spend the rest of the money getting him to go through the bike front to back and make sure it is good!!

Not so keen that I won't find one in Red, but I can make it red once it's been Sam'd!!

I'd also love another Blackbird. Same issues here with second hand bikes. But again, I know someone in the UK that would do a front to back check on it for me - and again, they aren't expensive!!

Sadly the KTM 390 Duke is the most expensive of the ones I'd have but might just get one for 4k!! LOL

Was about to say Blackbird....

Highpoint of Honda build quality during the overall highpoint of finish in the late 90s/early 00s when you could still use the properly toxic stuff :D

All rounder, day to day use sounds like a Honda to me. This CB1000 should fit the bill

but it's a Jap IL4 and I suspect I would get bored of it very quickly. So how about something a bit more interesting

I still miss mine. I did need to change but wish I'd had the money/garage to keep it!!

Can't import them or the TLs sadly (rules about needing ABS if over a certain power) but if I could get someone to go over it (engine mainly) then I'd happily buy one here and not use it till it had been 'refurbed'!! LOL

Would probably need high bars now, but I had Birds for 8 years, so know most of the accessories available!! :D

Tricky budget. All the things I'd really like are so close but just creep over. I'd love to say a KTM 990 Superduke or an SMT. But they really start at about 4.5K Shame because either make brilliant every day all-rounders, once you've taken the trouble to set them up how you want them.
I'd also have said a mk II Speed triple (pre-2011) but again, they really start at about 4.5K. Maybe in the current climate you might be lucky and find one of these three on budget, but realistically you've got to say they don't count. Shame, because I'd genuinely have any of these as an only bike by choice, regardless of budget.

Keeping to 4K, everything becomes slightly second best. So in no particular order:

Triumph 1050 Tiger
Triumph 800 Tiger
Yamaha Fazer 1000
Honda 800 VFR Crossrunner
Suzuki GSX1400................* winner (probably...)
Kwak ZXR1200
Kwak ZZR1200
