Driving test attempts

Some tragic figures right there.

One learner passed on their 76th attempt in a previous year and one unfortunate candidate has taken their theory test 128 times and still not passed - at a cost of £2,944.

That's a sample of what's out there sharing the roads, folks.

Not great. The only 'good' aspect is they're not (yet) out there.

For context, 42 million UK licence holders.

Someone clever with stats could probably plot a normal distribution and tell us where 15,000 umpteen attempts falls on the line.

Never mind the one's who are trying to get a UK licence,I wonder how many are out there either unlicensed or with a licence from some joke state.

A traffic cop I knew admitted to being awful at paperwork. Used to save up a heap, then plough through.

On one occasion, he'd stopped someone and taken their details. But it rang a bell for a different stop.

Checked back through the heap - same details, different person remembered.

They set up a check one morning. Unmarked car watching the address, marked car up the road "Routine stop, sir, been break-in s in the area".

Seven blokes using the 'family' driving licence.

According to UK Government and DVSA-based statistics, around 1.93 million car practical driving tests were conducted in 2024.

The total of practical tests in that list is 14,527. That's 0.75% of the total.

Or 99.25% take fewer than ten tests.

Doesn't sound quite so bad, that way does it? Always helps to do a little maths.

Got to admire their persistence. Perhaps they should get an 'honorary pass' for it? Then again, perhaps not 🙂
