Oi! Audiophiles! Budget starter turntable?
Foal now has my old stereo.
And 'old' is a fair description, Toshiba kit, bought in 1980.
. Sadly, turntable no longer works. It was last used in 2020.
My guess is the drive belt has perished. Local repair shop man said he'd want £35 for an hour to check it, plus further repair and parts costs.
I've suggested to Foal that he has a look inside. Nothing to lose, really.
However, on the pessimistic basis that it's FUBAR, any suggestions for a starter / budget turntable?

I've got this one...
https://www.currys.co.uk/products/sony- ... J7EALw_wcB
I use it standalone with Bluetooth (headphones and Sonos), but it's got phono out so will work with your setup.

If it's belt drive, all you need to do is lift the platter off and check the state of the belt. It's probably turned to dust...
Replacement belts are available for just about any turntable ever made. I'll try and dig out the name of the guy I used a year or so back.

This the guy I used. The website is from the late 90s, but he has a good 'how to' on how to get the platter off and measure the old belt:

How budget?
I'd be checking the mileage to Moofo's place.
If the Rega Planars mentioned are a bit spendy the Audio Technica range is worth a look.
Have a look at John Lewis or, better, if you have one locally, Richer Sounds are a good outfit and v helpful and worth a visit. (Sevenoaks are OK).

The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.

If you want a freebie , I am down in Brighton (ish). The deck works, need to find the weight to go with it. I replaced the platter as mine was warped ….
It’s not concourse condition …

I can recommend Rega Plannar but be aware you have to manually move the belt to get from 33rpm to 45rpm or the other way round. Unless you buy 2 turntables and leave them on their respective settings.

NB in other news, he googled the deck. It's direct drive, no belt!

In that case, unless it's a Technics SL1200 (which it isn't) then it's almost certainly uneconomic to repair.Horse wrote: Mon Sep 15, 2025 8:48 am NB in other news, he googled the deck. It's direct drive, no belt!

Good buyer
Turned up on time
Wasn’t a care in the community candidate
This place works better that Facebook Marketplace !
If I hadn’t just had my rear molar ripped out by a greek dentist who looked suspiciously like Robert Downey Junior, I would have offered you a coffee and some biscuits!!
And yes, we bought the car …
