The wife said to me in the week "What do you want for Father's day from the kids?"

I said nothing as it a hallmark holiday, so she said "Why don't you go out for a few hours on the bike? In fact why don't you go see your Dad and stop the night..."

Just done 145 miles from deepest Surrey to Leicestershire without touching a motorway. Nice run over to Reading and then up over the Ridgeway, over to Oxford and Cotswold back roads and Fosse Way to Hinckley. Tremendous weather and light traffic.

I stopped near RAF Benson for a bite to eat. Sat on the kerb of the petrol station eating my sandwich I was attacked not once, but twice by a dive bombing Red Kite who was trying to steal my M&S sandwich. To say I shit my pants is an understatement, I knew they were a large bird of prey but when you have one 2" from your face and with it's talons grazing across your fingers it's quite alarming...

Uncannily the same - we're off down the A5 though so it'll be a small window!

Seagull nicking a chip is bad enough but getting mugged by a flying, feathered, beady-eyed, military-grade beaked raptor is a bit

We had a Red Kite in Wales...used to sit in the tree and squak for food...all the cat's kills would get chucked in to the field for him...

Back home this morning, similar route avoiding all motorways. 140 miles. Forgotten what a shite hole Oxford Road in Reading is...

No attacks from raptors this time, just plenty of bugs killed.

Obviously on a white meat diet.

I said that Dinant was like Matlock - on steroids.

It's a popular biking destination and was a favourite destination of mine too.

(+ it's the birthplace of the man that invented the saxophone).

Fair comparison - and the bridge being lined with two-and-a-half-metre coloured saxophones now makes much, much more sense.

IIRC the bridge is, strangely, named the Charles de Gaulle bridge but I think it's generally know as the Sax bridge or some variant of that.

There's an Adolphe Sax museum there too.

If the cable car is running it's worth a trip up to the citadel too.

Left for Baden Baden just after that photo! Fantastic roads through the Black Forest and down to Lake Constance for lunch.

Just woke up in Kempten, ready to head east to the Alps via Innsbruck.
