It means being aware of injustice, prejudice and social issues.Saga Lout wrote: Tue Apr 01, 2025 4:02 pm I guess you do know what woke means. Would you care to enlighten us?
It doesn't mean being offended by everything, which ironically is the ways it's often used by Reform and Daily Mail readers who are easily offended.

Woke is an adjective derived from African-American English used since the 1930s or earlier to refer to awareness of racial prejudice and discrimination
TBH, I'm surprised the term has been around so long.
Even bland can be a type of character
Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
No, I mean current bun. Like a hot cross bun, but without the cross.
Teacakes tend to be wider and flatter.
I don't know if it's just the shape that makes them different or the recipe is slightly different.

However, I'm not entirely happy with Mr Dazzle's definition. It seems to me that to be woke you have to be aware of injustice, prejudice and social issues only as they affect certain groups of people. But what do I know? I'm just an old, straight, white man.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
And is that [part of] the point? As another OSWM, I probably don't, can't, understand what it's like to endure permanent ongoing prejudice.Saga Lout wrote: Tue Apr 01, 2025 8:26 pm [But what do I know? I'm just an old, straight, white man.
Odd, really, because many of us OSWM here are likely to have experienced unwarranted anti-motorcyclist prejudice and discrimination.
I've certainly been told to leave an empty (!) pub because they "Don't serve motorcyclists" (I asked whether we - my GF and I - were upsetting the customers?). And other, similar, experiences. Which pale into insignificance, really.
It wasn't that long ago that signs were seen stating "No blacks, no Irish, no dogs". Or that homosexuality was illegal.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Woke was probably avery good thing to start with, given its original intentions, but is long since been hijacked into a far left movement with little resemblance to the original inception, and based on that, i'd probably agree with Reform UKs use of the word woke.

You'd be far from alone in that assessment. I'm guessing you're not using the term "hijacked" with any irony there either.

Interesting that the original meaning wasn't even listed there.

It started with good intentions to be "aware of injustice, prejudice and social issues" but gradually morphed into not saying or doing anything to offend anybody*. We're on the road to Hell, aren't we?Taipan wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 11:44 am Woke was probably avery good thing to start with, given its original intentions, but is long since been hijacked into a far left movement with little resemblance to the original inception, and based on that, i'd probably agree with Reform UKs use of the word woke.
* Except the toxic elderly, and especially old, straight, white men. They're fair game. Say what you like about them, they caused all the world's problems.

it's funny how it's mostly the people who suffer the least prejudice who think that, isn't it?Saga Lout wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 12:02 pm but gradually morphed into not saying or doing anything to offend anybody*
But lets not also forget, this point started because Taipan was offended by a made up story about some hot cross buns
