'WTF have you got that much in your current account? we both asked, 'You're not earning any interest on it'.

'In case I need to get hold of some money quickly', he replied.

Between us, we convinced him that rather than earning feck-all on £16k, maybe we could open an instant access savings account. Cue much complaining of how he hasn't got time, it'll be too complicated, don't want to lose my money on the stock market, etc. So I grabbed his phone and opened him a Chase savings account in less than 15 minutes ('Chase who? Never heard of them'). He's still holding back a few grand in case of a sudden zombie apocalypse or such like, but it's a start.
Did he give any indication of what type of scenario may actually require this ?
His classic response to this question, and notwithstanding the wads of notes we sometimes find in drawers, is that he likes to keep enough money 'in case the roof needs doing'. Why this scenario causes so much angst I have no idea. Barring a substantial storm, the roof is going nowhere, and even in the event of the storm of the century, he has buildings insurance.

Must be an age thing.

YOu've also got the fact the roofer isn't going to rock up tomorrow and say "roof needs doing, i need £15k now or it's not happening"

You know that and I know that...

I do actually think it's an ageing thing. I've had other people tell me that their relatives suddenly start accumulating money in purses, bread bins, underwear drawers, etc.

F-I-L is lucky he has Mrs. G to look after his interests, as his other two kids are even more fecking useless with money.

My FIL is similar, but has his current account with Santander, which pays 4-5% ish on the first £20K in there.

Though I imagine getting your FiL to switch current accounts might also be a challenge!

I nipped outside at lunchtime and changed the wiper blades on my commuter.

Nothing like this time of year to show you how crap they are!

Yep, my FiL was the same. Also had multiple different savings accounts all with different small/medium amounts in.

I'm still not sure we actually found it all when we executed his will.

He took £500 cash with him when he had to be admitted to hospital for a few days.

How old is he? I'm 76 next week, I usually keep £200 in my current account and the rest goes into a savings account.

If he's a similar age, it's not an ageing thing. Some of you youngsters think anybody more than 10 years older than you is a doddery old fool. :D

He's 78 and fit as a flea, but has a fear of both new technology and banks. Put the two together and he's happy to miss out rather than delve into the unknown. Bear in mind he left school unable to read or write (he self-taught a few years later, so maybe it was school he had an aversion to) , so you can maybe understand why. Conversely, put him in room in dire need of plastering and decorating and he'd have it done by the end of the week.

Similar with my old mum when she asked me to start looking after her money - over 40k in her current account with 0% interest!

Still insists on keeping at least 5k in there now plus 1k in cash in a cupboard

My dad was always a right tight git and old school. He had a few bob and every day he used to logon to the laptop and check his bank balance, to make sure it was all there.
He refused any form of AV software even though he knew it was my job.

I told him that his laptop was wide open and every time he logged onto the bank website, he was tempting fate. But he knew best.

Pah, my mother refuses to use internet banking and has even had the bank disable the contactless function on her cards.

Same, except the only card she has is for an account that is literally the only way she can access it. And even then she's never used an ATM.
She's mega savvy about her accounts though - everything gets the best interest it can.

More of a 'heats my P just a tad' than a boiling matter.

Just set-up wife's new Samsung phone and, after deleting all the junk it assumes makes life liveable (games, Temu, Pinterest yaddayadda....) was doing a bit of tweaking and getting a bit bored with hitting Enter after putting the PIN in on the lock screen*. Thought, I'll fix that so it's the same as before, just dab in the PIN and hey, ho, away we go.

Err, no we don't...not without choosing a longer PIN we don't. Bugger. :(

* Fingerprints? Facial Recognition? No ta.
The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.

Well, it turns out my little tumble was more serious than I wanted to accept.

3 torn ligaments in my ankle, including apparently, the most important one !!

I'm highly unlikely to snowboard again this season.
I'm leaving resort to go to my parents for a couple weeks R and R before an MRI scan to see if I need surgery.

NOT fun
Not happy

MOT on the bike today. Expecting no issues, it failed! Rear spring has almost zero damping. Bollocks, expensive bollocks.
Earliest delivery for Honda OEM part is March 23. Perhaps. Double bollocks :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack:

Managed to find an aftermarket version for a bit less money, and a lot less wait but still a bloody expensive and inconvenient day.
