I usually have 1 note on me, either a a £10 or a £20 for emergencies when someone doesn't do cards. Otherwise everything goes on a CC, the debit card stays home except when I am going to draw out cash. I did that today (£50), first time in about 9 months. With luck that £50 will last me 2025.

Used cash at Wally World this morning, $67.

I tend to keep a moderate amount of cash for random things: eg haircuts and the guy who cleans our windows once a month.

I've started using cash again, where it's an option obvs, for anything under ~£30, particularly at self-check-outs.

One reason is to get a supply of change. The local phone signal means the parking app is 50/50 availability - if you're lucky.

Haven't used any of the 'wave your phone' things. Google has too big a share of my data already!

Why would anyone choose to use cash?

As long as you pay it off in full at the end of the month it is free credit, effectively an extra month's pay in your bank account if everything goes on the card.

I like free credit.

Better than cash because there's consumer protection. And, sometimes, 'points' etc to spend.

I totally get that question for larger purchases.

But - I have a few mates out here that have small businesses and whilst card charges are probably covered by the price of the item, I do prefer to try and pay cash for stuff under about 20-30€. So, going for coffees/breakfast; quick/small lunch; things like that.

I haven't had a credit card for about 25+ years - I'm shit with money and it's way better not to have one!! Equally, I rarely buy anything that would benefit from a credit card 'back up'!!

But, for smaller businesses here I definitely try and pay cash when I can - might be different over there, but small businesses here do appreciate it!!

Said it before, but IME it's small businesses which are the most likely to be card only here. Holding, paying in and generally handling cash is more expensive than cards nowadays, at least in the UK it would seem.

Still - only counts if you obey the law right? There's an old school hardware shop in Newport Pagnell which actually has a printed sign on the till asking you to pay cash because "it means we pay less Tax" I didn't ask them to explain how that works Surely it's satire.

I mostly use cards,but there are a few places locally where cash is still king. The local bakery,the fruit and veg shop are cash only.
