Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Windows 11.
I've just had the mandatory upgrade on my work PC. Why do MS make things worse each time?
I've only scratched the surface so far and already I've got annoyed that the start bar has changed. I used to be able to group all relevant programmes together and change the size of the tiles to reflect their importance/use. Now they are all tiny and if I want to organise them in any way they have to go into subfolders on the start menu, so an extra click to open a programme.
If I right click on a file there used to be a context menu pop up, now it's a menu with a few basic options and the full context menu is hidden under 'more options'. Again, an extra click.
Everything seems to have more space around it, all the files in a folder now have a small gap so they take up more screen space and therefore displays less files. More scrolling, more clicks required.
I thought these updates are meant to improve the interface, not take a step back. Maybe there is some sort of setting to make it less shit, but I can't be arsed to look at the moment.

Also they've dropped their great photo editor. Now it's a pain to edit photos.McNab wrote: Wed Jan 15, 2025 12:17 pm Windows 11.

You can move the start button to the left corner, if it helps
Mainstream support for W10 ends in September, so most organisations will been upgrading sooner rather than later.

I don't actually know what my work PC runs
I might even check one day.
All I know is that Windows 8 can fuck off.

I get why we've all upgraded, just don't understand why it is worse.

There was a Microsoft update that was actually a great improvement.
The one that ritually sacrificed Mr Clippy.

I bought an Floor Ice scraper, from Weldoms last week.
A 1.5m wooden handle with metal blade on the end.
The handle was not properly finished, it has splinters on it.
I found that out the hard way

Looking for a cleaner to come and er...clean my house.
Found a bunch called Purrrfect Home Cleaning.
FFS, you can't just shoehorn a pun into an unrelated industry. That makes no fucking sense. Unless they're getting cats to do the cleaning, in which case I take it back.

Either they only hire cat-people**. Or, they only clean houses that have cats* in them.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:09 pm Looking for a cleaner to come and er...clean my house.

* the way that's worded makes absolutely no presumptions whatsoever about whether or not the cats are supposed to be in the house.

hang on ... Maybe they bring cats with them?
or maybe, they ARE cat-people!

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
I used to work in logistics. For quite a long time. Ok, not planning buses but it’s a similar principle
I know it’s not hard to work out which drivers are starting at stupid o’clock the next day and let them know at a reasonable hour
When I hadn’t had notification of a stupid early start by 16h I continued with the plan to meet someone in the valley for dinner - I’d have time to get home at a decent time for a 5h or later start
19h15 I get the notification that I have to be at the depot by 3h30

So as we hadn’t eaten by then, I ended up sleeping in the valley cos it would have taken an hour to get home and they were staying closer to the dépôt than I live!!
So I feel like I’ve had almost no sleep. They fukkers in the office need to try getting the notification 7 hours before they need to get up for work and managing to eat and then sleep properly in that time
I am unimpressed

"Sorry, no phone reception, didn't get your message until today" Unless you're on a zero hours contract
That notification period is atrocious and doesn't allow anything like an acceptable time for sleep, travel, etc.
Did all of your recent training (I recall 'tachos' were mentioned) cover this?
Guessing, the organisation you're employed by doesn't have a dedicated H&S tyrant?

I was wondering similar stuff.
I'd have guessed/assumed there's a minimum legal notice period for driving jobs like this?

The reason I mentioned zero hours contract is that Foal is on one for his pub work.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sat Jan 18, 2025 9:39 am I was wondering similar stuff.

And the guy who does the rotas will have people on late night 'close' (which can mean not getting home until we'll past 2am) on call if there's a 10am no-show.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
@Mr. Dazzle @Horse
In all honesty, it's been getting better, they normally let us know between 13h-15h for the very early morning stuff, and that's mostly dealable with.
But yesterday sucked as me and him had planned a date simply because I wasn't starting at stupid o'clock!! (He was, but not as early as me as it turns out!). Had I known early enough, we'd have cancelled or changed the plans. But not knowing until that late, especially when we'd not eaten by then, was shit.
Can't do the phone thing as they'd have called me! And I'm straight about stuff like that - doesn't mean that I won't be having a word on Monday!!! Just need to find out who was supposed to send the info out and if it's my friend, then I can warn her that I'm going to say something (cos he'll be a dick to her about that!). But I'm reasonably sure it wasn't her and once I know, I'll be organising to meet the boss for coffee to ask him if it can be arranged better!!
I mean today wasn't so bad, but still only got the messages at 15h07 - have to get up just after midnight to get to the depot for 1h15
But it's still less than 12 hours notice.
Not sure that this was covered specifically on the course. My favourite instructor basically said that as I was on day off, I should be ready for any shift (he might have been teasing me, I am not always sure!!
).
But I totally agree that telling someone at 7pm that they need to get up at 2am is NOT enough notice (especially when they weren't expecting it as didn't get the notice early as expected!!). Even 15h for midnight is pushing it. But I'm heading for bed in a mo and after such a short sleep yesterday I'm hoping I'll sleep fast and long!!
One of my fellow students works for a company that doesn't tell him when his days off are until the night before
Now that to me is equally unacceptable - work to live, not live to work!!

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
For extra info, my boss is seriously ‘on it’s ref driving hours and the max working day
Never ever go over the driving hours (so far anyway!!
). And the working day can’t be more than 14hours and he’ll make sure we stop with enough time to get the appropriate rest between shifts
It’s one of the reasons I was surprised and annoyed about the lack of notice on Friday!!

They probably specialise in cleaning houses with multiple cats. They will take your money, give the house a cursory glance, clean Baby Dazzle's fingerprints of something shiny and declare it clean. No cat hairs or shit, must be clean.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:09 pm Looking for a cleaner to come and er...clean my house.
