Battery bike crackdown | Derbyshire cops seize 99 illegal electric two-wheelers in one month
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/202 ... erbyshire/
Police in Derbyshire have seized 99 illegal e-bikes, electric mopeds, and scooters across a month of action, with 39 of those machines apprehended in just one day.
“E-scooters can only be used on private land, and e-bikes have to meet certain requirements,” Sergeant Jamie Millard said. “Some of the vehicles we seized were a danger to both the rider and those around them, as they were rigged to go at high speeds which also carries a fire risk too.”
As well as not meeting the legal requirements for public road use, urban electric vehicles like this can be involved in criminal activity, including the theft of motorcycles. Illegal use of these machines can also damage the reputation of law-abiding motorbike and scooter riders.
“These results make it clear that we are taking action against the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters,” Sgt Millard continued. “We hope this action reassures the community of Derby and helps educate potential buyers about the law and risks in the run up to Christmas.”
The 39 vehicle seizures across a single day took place on Friday, November 29, with officers stopping one machine that had been modified to reach 50mph, with no working brakes. Two arrests were also made for immigration offences.
The Derbyshire force have also now moved to a ‘seize first’ stance on e-scooters – no longer having to issue a warning when stopped for a first offence. Further to this, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) have also been granted the power to take the two-wheelers off the streets.

I still don't get the differentiation between eBikes and eScooters.
Why are (with some parameters) eBikes allowed and eScooters not?

Re: Battery bike crackdown | Derbyshire cops seize 99 illegal electric two-wheelers in one month
an actual ebike has a maximum assist speed of <16mph. Once you hit that, the cut-off is there and it stops assisting you and then becomes a 'bicycle' where you power it yourself. That's an ebike.
Things like Surrons are no Ebikes... they're electric motorbikes that are unregulated. Things like the bastardised bikes you see with motors delivering food are not Ebikes either.... they're again, motorbikes. Even if they require some pedalling, they're still not ebikes.
The problem cyclists have is that 90% of the public think we're all the same and anyone with an ebike is as bad as the wankers above.

I understand the Surron thing, but...weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 10:26 aman actual ebike has a maximum assist speed of <16mph. Once you hit that, the cut-off is there and it stops assisting you and then becomes a 'bicycle' where you power it yourself. That's an ebike.

If an actual eScooter had a maximum assist speed of <16mph, and then once you hit that, the cut-off was there and it stoped assisting you and became a 'scooter' where you powered it yourself, what would be the difference?

i would assume they're OK. Hence being allowed in cities etc.Sunny wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 10:29 amI understand the Surron thing, but...weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 10:26 aman actual ebike has a maximum assist speed of <16mph. These are again restricted to 15.5mph and therefore legal. (in the right places)

We should embrace such forms of green transport. Its such a crock of shit when you can hire one but not use your own.

Good idea BUT motorized stuff, leccy or otherwise, belongs on the road and with compulsory insurance. Most of this shit is a serious danger to pedestrians.

No more than kids on roller skates or ordinary scooters and bicycles. Further to that, we see total stupidity from many cyclists on pedal powered road bikes and MTBs everywhere, especially in cities such as London, but I don't see any great outcry over that. We should deal with the incidents as they happen and stop making the innocent pay for the crimes of the guilty. All forms of green transport should be encouraged imo.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 10:57 amGood idea BUT motorized stuff, leccy or otherwise, belongs on the road and with compulsory insurance. 1. Yes there's lots of outcry over it. Constantly... Then when cyclists are killed by car drivers they don't even get a slap on the wrist, even if deliberate.Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 11:09 amNo more than kids on roller skates or ordinary scooters and bicycles. 2. Green ? How are the batteries produced ?
3. They're illegal.... it can't be any clearer.

1. Disagree. I think Plod is pretty rabid over protecting cyclists and ignores things like red light jumping, or at least they do here in London.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 11:16 am1. 2. Yeah I can't argue with the battery issue, but ebikes give a usable, practical range to people who wouldn't normally cycle that far and would take the car instead.
3. They shouldn't be and a lot of other countries see their benefits, why can't we!

You aren't allowed to own them privately though. I think it's a weird distinction between bikes and scooters.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 10:37 ami would assume they're OK. Re: Battery bike crackdown | Derbyshire cops seize 99 illegal electric two-wheelers in one month
I think this is one of the main points, it seems that the no 1 reason for owning a suron is for fast and efficient delivery of 'product' by youngsters that think it's great to have a £4k bike given to them.
Re: Battery bike crackdown | Derbyshire cops seize 99 illegal electric two-wheelers in one month
My Emtb is pedal assisted up to 16 mph, it has Emtb suspension and bigger than normal mtb brakes. Your average 'deliveroo' (other exploitative food delivery services are available) has normal (usually cheapy brakes) and is unrestricted.
Escooters have tiny wheels which are not good on todays pot-holed roads and a tiny rear wheel brake only.
My bike's battery is CE marked and made by Bosch, costs £400+, who knows where the escooter or cheapy ebike batteries are made which is why so many of them are going up in flames and its not an easily extinguishable fire.
I think the cat is out of the bag on Escooters, make them legal, require them to be certified and meet safety standards like bicycles and Emtbs then and clamp down on shops selling them to kids.

Not that the police are ever hypocrites.
Istr the bottom photo is a chief constable riding an unlicensed and uninsured motor vehicle in a pedestrian only area.
