Assad: What does Putin get for harbouring him?
On the basis that Assad had to get up and leave quickly , leaving his fleet of vehicles behind, one assumes that he had sorted his affairs ...
But what are the benefits to Putin in qiving him asylum?
Whilst he was a Putinite whilst in power, his top trumps value is now very little!

I assume he'll have $manybillions stashed away so he'll be able to pay his B&B bills. He won't cost much to accommodate anyway and he can always be pulled out of cold storage if the tide turns in Syria. If it's anything like here they'll be wanting him back in 6 months.

Biden is praising the new guy, but seems to be ignoring the fact that one of his first acts was to release all the ISIS prisoners..

Assad gets a fourteenth floor flat with lots of easy-open windows. Putin probably gets the keys to Assad's bank account(s)

It sends a heartwarming, comforting message to all those African dictators that he's propping up. And 3 million packets of Haribos, because why wouldn't you?Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 3:45 pm On the basis that Assad had to get up and leave quickly , leaving his fleet of vehicles behind, one assumes that he had sorted his affairs ...

Yup. It wouldn't do to have people like Tchiani in Niger thinking that Russia doesn't stand by people when times get tough....particularly when Niger's uranium mining supplies 25% of the material used by the european reactor fleet...Hoonercat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 5:19 pmIt sends a heartwarming, comforting message to all those African dictators that he's propping up. But presumably Assad effectively pays potection money going forward?
His assests may not be easy to access (or considered his, even if they were able to liberate them)

He'll have been shovelling large slabs of the country's dosh etc into Switzerland, 'offshore' etc for umpteen years. It's the basic operating model.
You'll probably find he has vast assets inside Syria that can be sold as necessary without anyone having the faintest who the money is going to. Probably find a chunk of real estate in London that the same applies.

What's the world coming to when a moustache-toting* despot can't even squirrel away a few hundred million for a rainy day?
Honestly, if the woke world isn't taking a pop at Wallace they're victimising poor old Assad.
*Think about it. When was the last time you saw a despotic tyrant without facial hair?

Re: Assad: What does Putin get for harbouring him?
Years ago I was working construction in London for some Irish chaps. One project was the Syrian embassy which was being striped to the four bare walls. At least one gun was found in the attic. The Irish foreman said he'd make sure it "got to the right people"...Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 7:13 pm He'll have been shovelling large slabs of the country's dosh etc into Switzerland, 'offshore' etc for umpteen years. I would imagine there might be some folks residing in Syria that might want a word with the guy.

Re: Assad: What does Putin get for harbouring him?
Looking back at images, Al-Assad hasn't always sported (a rather poor attempt at) a 'tache. He probably only went all despot-ish when he added it.
One things for sure, there's no point in shaving it off as an attempt to disguise himself.

The tasch is only cos he has a weak upper lip (according to the wife)
The Daily Borisograph had a feature on this very subject today. Basically he has loads of money in property in London , Moscow, elsewhere . But will definitely not be invited to the Putin’s for Karaoke and Doritos.
More worrying for Assad is that some of these properties are luxury flats in Moscow. I hope they don’t have balconies
