If motorcycles were invented today I doubt they'd be allowed on the public highway,those in power would rather we used public transport.
Ideally we should get political & engage with the politicians but we won't until they take the piss & do something really anti-motorcycling.
I think the system's set up to discourage motorcycling & can't see them making it more accesible,I wonder how many,if any MP's or bureaucrats ride a motorcycle?
There is (or maybe was) a Parliamentary Motorcycle Club - but I can't find anything about them in 5 second of googling....

IIRC Lembit Opik (he who was famous for shagging a Cheeky Girl) rides bikes.

He had two years 'life' on the CBT certificate.

Mod 1 tests fairly basic machine control stuff. Either their training and preparation wasn't sufficient, or - as said - perhaps they're not yet up to road riding?

Would you rather have the roads full of people who clearly can't ride properly ?

Yes, better than can't drive properly. Keep traffic moving and all that.

Why are cbt test on 2 year repeat. if you've been riding for 2 years, why the need to retake. Might not want a big bike. If you pass a test, you've passed a test. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

CBT isn't a test. That's like saying you should be able to drive on a provisional forever, which of course you cannot.

A CBT is a 1 day introduction not a test.

Interestingly (maybe not!), when I driving to school the other day and back the next, the site of a moto school had about 4 students on it doing the cone stuff. If was not warm!! Well, not cold like where I am, but not warm!

Mind you, I'm a bit wary that the French learn to ride a moto with the instructor following in a car FFS!! How can you learn like that???

I think it's still quite popular over here, but I think I've said before, roads, weather, longer rides to be had easily probably play a part?

Pretty amazing! They let me pass my CBT and I wheelied a feet-out-lean-back style 125 away from a T junction whilst turning right! :lol: :lol: :lol: (I didn't crash it though :D ). They did check I didn't have a bike to ride at home, and knew I was going back the following week to do a five day course!!

Mind you - it's easier than the bastarding highway code!!! :angry-cussingblack:

I haven’t noticed a decrease in numbers of bikes on the roads round here, if anything numbers of smaller bikes and scooters seem to be growing. Rider training schools seem to be well booked up too.

The cost of getting the Mod2 must be offputting though and unlike the good old days of taking your full licence test on a small bike, mine was an RXS 100 :P , now you need to use a 50Kw+ bike for the cat A.

Now that in itself is a ballache because the only option really is to hire a riding school bike + instructor for the day of the test.

We managed to get insurance cover for my lad for duration of the test on our Fazer which in theory ;) meant he had zero experience of that bike until the actual test.

No, you don't. It's continually assessed. Learners keep going until given their certificate.

Most people complete in one day.

Yes I do, I was there when one fella was told by instructor he had failed by not meeting the standard required, now you may know and I now know this is BS, but at the time I was glad of it.

But why does a cbt expire after 2 years?. I used to work with an old fella with a C90. Only transport he had and needed. Used every day and every 2 years he had to pay and repeat.

Our laws are archaic, our processes to change them are glacial. Just look at the rules on eg Segways. Intuitive, I can go to Boston in the US and without any training or prior knowledge ride them in heavy traffic. In the UK they are banned. Why? They are absolutely intuitive to ride.

Of course it's a test, if you fail it, you can't ride. If you're riding, having to do the same thing every two years smacks of revenue generation.

I passed my LGV artic test when I was 21, I didn't sit in a lorry again for about 8 years, didn't drive an artic for about 10 years. All without doing another test. That would be more of a safety issue than someone suddenly forgetting how to ride a bike after two years.

I know an instructor, 90% of his pupils are foreign types wanting to work for food delivery companies.

Back in the day you'd get a lot of people buying a wee C90 or H100 to go to work on. You never hear of that now. Too much hassle for adults. Kids aren't wanting on the road on a 50cc at 16 any more, they're content to wait until they're 17 and they can get their TDi whatever running on red diesel, which is warmer, faster, cheaper to run and most importantly, more attractive to the opposite sex than a bike. You can buy a lot of VAG mobile for the price of a bike.

Kids like the ebikes and scooters, 99.9% the cops turn a blind eye to them as the paperwork is enormous and if wee Seamy gets his scooter seized, the cops get bricked when they go back into the estate.

It's not a test, you can't fail. It's training.

If you complete the training course and meet the required standard, you get a certificate.

If you don't meet the standard, you haven't completed the course, so you keep taking more training until you do.
