It's weird, because pardoning implies the Turkey did something wrong.

So these tariffs...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg7y52n411o

From the article...

He has previously claimed that these taxes are "not going to be a cost to you, it’s a cost to another country".

Surely if you were importing into the USA, you just put your prices up to cover the tariff, impacting the end consumer?

If stuff is being imported, I would assume there is a demand for it because it's not produced locally?

Congratulations, you've understood basic economics better than the president elect

The other thign which happens is, foreign suppliers stop selling in the US and US firms enjoy a better domestic market. This stifles innovation in the US (why bother making products better when you have no competition?), then if/when the tariff comes down you suddenly have a load of competition from superior foreign firms and you go out of business.

Did Mexico ever end up paying for that wall?

yeah I get that, but that's not really a pardon :D Pardoning is when you let someone off the consequences of a conviction (which, just for pedantry, is not the same as saying someone is innocent).

I suppose the Turkey has been convicted of being delicious and easy to catch. :obscene-birdiedoublered:

Wild turkeys live in the woods near my sister in law's place in Tennessee. You wouldn't mess with one unless you were carrying a gun, they're feisty things. And big. Dunno whether they're delicious or not...

It's a tradition that the president pardons a turkey going back to Loncoln in 1865.
I know, but Biden was so confused I'm surprised he didn't appoint them to his cabinet.

In comparison to the turkeys Trump’s appointing? Just for balance, like.

The tariffs are merely a threat. Trudeau & Sheinbaum have two months to get their fucking act together. If other countries want to get in a tariff/trade war, the US can just stop exporting food to them.

Having heard Biden yesterday, I just realized who he reminded me of... Rowley Birkin QC :)

They already have, TBF. :D

But then if Europe for example puts a retaliatory trade barrier up they then need two factories, which might be more expensive, and so on.

They've done the tariff thing before.

In 1930, Hoover signed the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act, which taxed imports with the intention of encouraging buyers to purchase American products, which worsened the Depression because foreign governments retaliated with tariffs on American exports.

Harold Wilson, on the other hand, had an 'I'm backing Britain' campaign to encourage people to buy home-made stuff instead of furrin. You could even get stickers!

There’s very little new under the sun, and (excepting vote grabbing rhetoric) there’s generally a reason why things are done the way they are.

Beemer SUVs are built by 11,000 employees in South Carolina, 1500/day. Factory has been there since '94.
