Re: In todays news...
Is there any way of telling whether:
- the Brexit petition was predominantly signed by remainers
- the current petition is predominantly being signed by disgruntled Labour voters

Dunno, I can sort of see the point. It's easy to believe that things are all hunky dory and that racism is no longer an issue, but just look a little harder and there it is festering away.
Shine a light on it and they scurry away into the darker corners like shithouse rats claiming theyre just trying to uphold British Values (whatever they are).

Yep. With that in mind it’s a little surprising that the tories elected a black woman as their leader. As sad as it is, they must know that it will split the vote with the reform party.demographic wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 8:58 pm

You can look at the map. As far as I can see, Brentford and Ongar are in the lead with 6.96% of its constituents signing, closely followed by Castle Point, Rayleigh and Wickford, Maldon and Clacton. (Makes me proud of my adopted county. ) The lightest areas on the map are the dyed in the wool Labour areas: Greater London, Central Manchester, Central Birmingham, etc.

Re: In todays news...
From my experience, particularly in the workplace, racism has absolutely nothing to do with skin colour.

Don't know enough of them to generalise. That particular one wasn't.
He was being yelled at by a member of a minority group, who was unhappy at perceived discrimination. Actually more to do with perceived likelihood of violence. Which the family was known for, and court records support the view.

Re: In todays news...
I've worked in a very multicultural environment for over 30 years. Racism is very much a double edged sword and it is most certainly not only white Vs black. In fact the worst I've known is Africans Vs West Indians and racism is most definitely alive and kicking in the Asian sub groups.
I have a Jamaican mate (my sisters other half) and some of his stories are indeed grim, even with simple thing like not being able to hail a black cab, but his level of expectancy over some things is extraordinary. In the few years I've known him i think he's been surprised at how well he's been accepted where we live, especially when I told him a lot of us where skinheads and mods growing up, so he thought he'd experiance hate round here, but as I explained, reggae and Ska were massive round here and black people weren't thought of like he expects they would be.
I've had some interesting conversations with black colleagues over issues like stop and search and how the Met Police treat them and all about being profiled, which is an eye opener to say the least. Not sure how we'll ever get past some issues tbh, the hate is too entrenched in many.

Growing up in Bradford was influenced heavily by tensions between differing races and cultures.Taipan wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 2:21 pmI've worked in a very multicultural environment for over 30 years. Looking back, I am ashamed of some of my reactions, but that's (sadly) the way it was.
Now I'm an immigrant so see it from the other side now. But only had 100% positive reactions.
Conversely, I see racism from tourists.
There are about 10 looky looky men around town and 4 or 5 often stop for a chat.
Elvis my dog always barks at them coz of the flashing lights and multi coloured shit they sell. 2 of them give him treats as he's barking
But sometimes when he barks, I hear comments from other customers, such as "Yeah, tell the ***** ***** to fuck off"
I have to let it go, but sometimes respond with...
hey mate, they all live here legally. You're a guest in their country. Stop being so fucking stupid
That does the trick usually

Re: In todays news...
I had a black colleague who lived in South London, his girlfriend lived on North London and he drove a smart BMW between hers and his, often late at night.
He was getting stopped about twice a week on average by the Met, and was pretty pissed off. Steps were mostly pretty thorough and time consuming, sometimes handcuffed. Others were with crews he had met before and were quick and polite.
OTOH the Met could show data that a young black bloke in a flash car, late at night was a much more likely than say a middle aged white guy to be a drug dealer, and a lot more likely to be armed with a knife or a gun.
Not sure how you solve that conundrum, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

It'll be a very short debate for sure. I bet a good portion of that are disgruntled labour voters.

The sense of shock, betrayal and dismay from most of my Labour voting colleagues is astounding. I think I have more hope for Labours policies than they do!
