Appraisals and all the management speak bollocks that goes with them! In all the years I've wasted my team doing these things no change has ever come out of it, not that i've wanted change which is why i cant answer career development questions as I dont want to develop it. At our place they are just a total waste if everyone's time.

I only ever wanted to be above the sack level. Didn't want to work hard. Just wanted to keep my job.Taipan wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 5:01 pm Appraisals and all the management speak bollocks that goes with them! I'm sure there's a point to them somewhere, but they've not acted on here no matter what they say. Due to dept changes, line and senior management changes etc i've not even set/been set objectives etc and every time I've put down training requirements, its not been made available to me. But once again I have to go through the charade of filling in bullshit to no avail. My new line manager and dept head assure me that wont be the case and my employer is answerable if it doesn't act on things. Yeah right...Yorick wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 5:05 pmI only ever wanted to be above the sack level. Didn't want to work hard. I can beat that. We have 'Salary Dialogue Meetings' which should take an hour. It's where I sit with my staff and we have a two way exchange about the rise they're getting (or not!). It usually goes like this:
Me: Thanks for your efforts, your salary is increasing by x%, which equates to £y.
Them: OK.
Me: Still got 58 minutes. How's the kids getting on at school?
Dialogue, my arse.

I'd like to see the English rugby team watch the Haka then respond with a Morris dance. It's traditional, innit?gremlin wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:35 am And Kiwis constantly doing the Haka at every opportunity.

Generally I'm in favour of appraisals but I'm not a fan of how they are constructed, nor how the results are analysed and actions appropriately taken.Taipan wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 5:01 pm Appraisals and all the management speak bollocks that goes with them! My gut feeling is that it's just a mechanism primarily to be used against poor performers, to document that they were given multiple warnings and opportunities to improve. I'm convinced that the results of the majority are just filed and used to build some pointless KPI to wave at the CEO.

What's most annoying is their insistence that the haka is done immediately before kick off, no response allowed. It should at least be followed by the anthems.
Interesting historical fact- the first time an anthem was sung at an international sporting event was in 1905 at the Wales v New Zeland rugby match. After the haka the crowd began singing "Hen Wlad fy Nhadau" as a response. Wales went on to win (the first of only 3 wind against NZ)

My ISP is Vodafone. Every couple of weeks they send me an email inviting me to upgrade my broadband by taking a new 24 month contract for £35/month. I've just received their latest offer: "big savings to be made in our Black Friday event". A 24 month contract for just £35/month.

Black Friday is bollocks.
I use Amazon loads, they know what I like, they have a massive opportunity at this time of year to suck (!) me in using all that data to encourage me to spring for Christmas presents for family or (more likely) let others know that if they're that desperate to buy ME something it's on offer now at a steal.
But all I get is "Look! <productName> now 6% off!"

Fronch electricity supply. Maddening.
I dunno if just me or this happens to everybody and is just 'how it is'.
Part of the way our electricity supply is contracted is according to power capacity, you go over it and the main trip switch trips.
Our power capacity is supposedly sufficient for our needs: # of people; type of heating; insulation; electrical equipment likely to run concurrently.
Except it isn't. If the immersion is on (timed to go on twice a day in low-peak-cost, one of which is mid-afternoon) and you put literally anything else on with a high draw (washing mc, dishwasher, fecking toaster even) there is a really high chance that the trip will go.
This always happens during a fecking online meeting.
Yes, I've upped the power capacity - didn't see any noticeable difference, except I'm paying more for the privilege.

Here they call it "potentia", you set how much you need in kw. Most people find 3 to 5kw about right, I'm totally solar with a 5kw inverter so it doesn't bother me.

That sounds like an ISP selling an unlimited contract and then slapping a 'fair usage' policy in the small print.

I know it's not really your point, but 12kW feels like a lot anyway
But then I suppose you do live down in a semi-restored old shed?

That reminds me how Angela Rippon boils my piss. In the electricity ad she tells us she does her gardening off-peak. Considering off-peak is between 11pm and 6am, she's either doing it in the dark or annoying her neighbours with the lawn mower and hedge trimmers at 5am.Mussels wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2024 4:24 pm'we'll give you an off-peak period but it's only for show'.DefTrap wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2024 3:52 pm Fronch electricity supply. Oh it's a fully restored old shed, it's just not a fully insulated old shed.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2024 4:27 pm I know it's not really your point, but 12kW feels like a lot anyway

I'm freezing cold AND annoyed by the electrical system's inability to run three things concurrently. Being annoyed only has a marginal additional impact on my warmth.
I'm going out soon anyway - it's always warmer outside.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
A quick Google says that's 9.6kw. Wifey managed to trip our 5kw system a couple of weeks ago, the microwave was on, the air fryer was on and she switched the kettle on which upset things. With your amount she could have put the kettle and the washing machine on. I don't have enough stuff to draw 9.6kw if it was all on at the same time.
