According to the article they've ridden it - and, unsurprisingly, thrown it down the track, damaging it 21 days before it was shipped to sit on a pedestal at an Italian custom bike show. I guess the story says it all.

Anecdote and possible myth aside, sliding into a humped tank can cause an 'open book' fracture of the pelvis. It can easily be fatal as broken bone can pierce major blood vessels.

The copper was Ted Clements, IAM Chief Examiner at the time I heard him tell the story.

In A&E they wanted a urine sample to check for blood.

Took him 20 minutes. But his hands were shaking so much he dropped the jar and it smashed.

That ^^ tank rack is like the one I had on my 'new' Bonnie, fixed with 4 suction cups. The original ones were screwed into bosses welded or brazed to the tank.
