Training supplements - do ya?
I know there's many a keen cyclist on this here outlying, desolate sub-forum, and I recall some you are into your training, triathlons, etc.
I was surprised there are no threads on nutrition for training/competition etc. So, do ya?
I'm training (for nothing other than to keep ahead of the Grim Reaper) 4/5 times a week and I find that creatine helps boost performance in terms of getting that extra rep done or lifting just that little bit more, having taken a 3g scoop every day(ish) for the last 5 years* or so. I use the energy bars from Decathlon.
Give me so much boost on enduro rides.
Even moreso on trackdays. I can ride longer than 10 years ago.

Have you ever heard of the placebo effect?
I can see athletes who are pushing limits and endurance needing suppliments.
And the steriod boys needing protein - but I doubt anyone else reaches the margins of mineral / salt/ amino acid/carb deprivation in their spin classes.
I am sure the talented Weeksy must be on a special diet. My nephew, when he was racing in a French road race team, had a coach texting him is training plans and eating regime every week.

Yeah. There's always an element of that. However, my own experience and the science seem to back up that it does give a boost during high intensity training.
Protein is essential if training, especially for us gentlemen of a certain age, as the body starts to naturally lose muscle mass, so the training, and the nutrition that goes with it, has to take that into account.

I gave creatine a go when it was last discussed on here, didn't do anything for me. Daughter swears by it though.

I nibbled on bacon, bananas and energy bars all day. I didn't get tired on any of the 3 days on track.

Never found them necessary or useful. My only time using Gels was a proper shit-show.
Bars i could go for, but not something i've really got into.
I'd be curious as to what people are using though.

As has already been said, I don't think that special supplements are needed until you're really pushing hard and training for several hours a day. I have recently upped the amount of protein that I'm eating and I feel a lot better for it and usually less hungry.
If I'm planning on riding for 4 or 5 hours I'll always take food to snack on or I won't make it, usually bananas, granola bar and sweeties, and if I'm really organised a scotch egg
I've worked with guys that have gone on creatine while we've been on deployment and they've generally turned into right arseoles.

Are you confusing creatine with steroids? 'Roids are known to have all sorts of side effects, hence their restrictions. Creatine you buy in most health food shops and from online retailers.
That said, I've known people who get into the gym and then become somewhat obsessed with getting goon size. No 'roids needed to get a bit arsey.
And as I said, I've been knocking back creatine for ages and I'm PERFECTLY FUCKING RATIONAL!!

deffo not confusing creatine (legal to use in the military) and roids (illegal in the military and will get picked up on the regular piss tests)
one cretin landed up being ordered to stop taking it for the remainder of the deployment.

I use Tailwind Cola caffeine powder/electrolyte for my early doors ride to work, that’s about it.
