Tesla and BYD both make profit from selling only EVs. Not sure its still the case but Tesla were the world's most valuable car company at one point...they might have been overtaken by BYD though, not sure.

Ford are clearly doing something wrong.

Ford might not exist in 20 year's time if they're not careful.

Farley already split the company into three entities so the EV side doesn't drag down the other two when it all goes tits up.

Altho with that said, about $10k of every vehicle cost is to cover retirement benefits of the old duffers sitting at home. That's not sustainable either.

Clearly, first it was the abomination they called the Mustang, and now a bloated SUV they're calling the Capri :angry-cussingblack:

The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has seen its quarterly revenues soar, beating Tesla's for the first time.

It posted more than 200bn yuan ($28.2bn, £21.8bn) in revenues between July and September. This is a 24% jump from the same period last year, and more than Elon Musk's company whose quarterly revenue was $25.2bn.

However, Tesla still sold more electric vehicle (EVs) than BYD in the third quarter.

Given the spaceship mileage yankmobiles do, its no surprise to me that EVs aren't very successful there, especially out of the cities and in rural areas. Even Harley owners with peanut tanks have range anxiety! :D A Prius in LA is one thing, but a Ford Ev pick up in Montana, lolz!

There was a case a couple of months ago where someone drove their EV from AZ to Wa State. The usual/direct route would be Az-Nv-Idaho, Oregon then Wa.. They had to go from Az into California far enough to pass through LA & then up the coast as there wasn't sufficient infrastructure to go the most direct route. What should have been a one day trip ended up taking 4 days.
Biden promised us something like 50,000 charging stations, in the past 4 years they've built.... 8
Part of the problem is they came up with so much environmental regulatory bullshit that they can't build them.

Tesla & BYD sales are down 20% from a year ago.

Not according to BYD they're not. This includes Hybrids though.

Edit: There you go, pure EVs only. BYD are set for a right spanking from Trade Barriers though as western OEMs fight back against Chinese state support etc.

Western governments and OEMs need to watch out and make sure Chinese EV firms don't supplant them like Japanese motorcycles did.

You say that, buy the vast vast majority of Yanks live in the major urban centres. Very few people actually live on those long straight roads through corn fields.

Average annual mileage is heavily skewed by a few big milers too, the people in California, New York, Florida...where the money is basically...don't drive very much further than we do.

Go on ebay.com and find low milage American cars. Simple fact is Yank cars do a lot higher mileage than their euro counterparts. The effin place is massive! EVs are a long way off of meeting the required criteria from American motorists. Even you said how pleased your parents were to find they could go a 130 miles without a charging hinderance and thats in the UK! I'm all for te EVs really but they aint there yet.

About 50,000 people a day from where I live commute to work in LA, that's at least 55 miles, so 550 miles a week. I killed 3 vehicles doing that commute.

Depends on location. In SoCal/Nv/Az cars don't corrode away in a couple of years (or 30 years for matter), but in other places they're totally rotted out & in the scrap yard in 2 or 3 years.

If your car has any kind of "plug it into the dealer" computer the OEM will have a decent amount of data on how you drive it. If you have any kind of app associated with your car the OEM will have a really good idea of how you drive it.

When we design cars we don't just guess how people use them. I'm not basing the statement about how many miles people do on second hand car sales ;)

I have no intention of getting a BEV in the foreseeable future, but I'm not a hater. I can see they have a great niche as city cars, in fact it wouldn't surprise me to see some city centres going EV-only in the future. Towns and cities offer the best options for charger location, and range isn't really an issue for urban commuting. This would enable the manufacture of cars with smaller (hence cheaper) batteries that could compete on price with ICE cars. Same goes for bikes in fact, though we need to get away from the old "tank between your knees" format. Putting a battery there puts a lot of weight high up and you still can't carry a large battery for range. Scooters are where it's at, sit on the damn battery.

For me the problem is that they lack flexibility. You can get the range if you spend a fortune on a mahoosive capacity battery and at the end of the day you don't know how long that battery's going to last. If your 5 year old car with 300 miles range won't do 100 in winter you've pissed a lot of money up the wall. The charging infrastructure out of town is also pretty patchy, though I accept that could change (assuming our power generation and distribution facilities can cope with the added demand).

Popped up on my Linkedin, Mercedes have broken Porsche's record for distance driven in a 'production'* EV inside 24hr.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/tech ... nce-record

Smidge over 2300 miles in 24hr, including charging stops. So averaging >90mph including the time you were stationary charging.

Pretty easy to find a charger when you're driving in a big circle though :D

*pre production car not actually on sale yet, the real thing will be slightly better I bet

My DiL has just bought one. Vauxhall Mokka; pre reg 3 months old, 700 miles, 20k. It’s not a bad little car. Lovely and quiet, seems fairly well built, has an 8 year battery warranty and a realistic range of 190 miles.

99 percent of her driving is her daily commute of around 70 miles. She can charge it up at home from 30% to full for around £2.50.

It definitely makes sense for her.

Makes economic sense for some, not for others.

I would need to do ALL my charging at public chargers, not many about locally. And I really need a 250+ mile range, not just when new and not just in warm dry weather.

And I also want a decent residual value after 10 years and 100k miles.
