Phone Advice Needed

Post by Pirahna »

Last Tuesday wifey was doing stuff on her PC with the Spanish tax office, one of the things she did was change her contact details which included her phone number. Wednesday morning she gets a text from the Spanish tax office with a link to click on. She does owe them a few Euros (about €50) so she clicks on the link and after several attempts gets her Wise card to register. Luckily Wise stopped all the transactions and the only harm done is that she needs a new card.

Fast forward to today and she says she's been having trouble with Whatsapp, when she makes a video call the person on the other end can see her but not hear her. How long has this been going on? Since last Wednesday when she clicked on the dodgy website. What are the chances of the phone being toast?

Doubt there's a link.

1. Has she restarted the phone recently, if not, do.
2. If it's still not working, reinstall Whatsapp (after making sure it's all backed up* if she wants to keep all the messages)

*if it's an android there's options to backup to the google account.

The phone as been restarted a couple of times and Whatsapp has been reinstalled. There's nothing in the settings that looks amiss.

Does the WhatsApp still have permission to use the Microphone?

I does have microphone permissions. I can look at the microphone and it shows that Whatsapp has accessed it.

Is the WhatsApp issue only with one person, are you sure the problem is your end?

It's only Whatsapp video calls, it doesn't matter who it's to or who initiated the call. Very weird, and also strange that it started when she went to the dodgy website.

I'd be very tempted to factory reset the phone and reload the apps, normally I'd try and find the fault but if a bad link was used then I wouldn't mess around.

A factory reset was my next thing to do. I'll try it later today when I can get the phone from her. She has no idea what her Google password is (or any of the others) so it should be a painful experience.

Does the microphone still work with everything else eg normal phone calls?

It does. The thing that got me a bit worried was it coincided with her clicking on the dodgy link. I'll reset the phone later and let her sort it out. She's trying to work out what her Google password is at the moment.

Could it be as simple as the mike being disabled in whatsapp settings?

Have you tried trading it in for a nice new Pixel 9?

Besides Permissions there's a toggle in Privacy settings that can affect the microphone use with some apps. So it sounds like it wouldn't affect the use as a phone but might with certain apps. It's an odd one 🤔

Got an old phone with all the apps on? Before going scorched earth with a factory reset, just out of interest, I'd stick the SIM in it and see if WhatsApp works with the mic.

Not necessarily very logical I admit. :)

In the end I did a factory reset on the phone, installed WhatsApp, and it's still broken. The microphone is fine on a WhatsApp voice call, not working on a video call.

Does a factory reset just reset the phone, or does it also reset the network settings? Reason for asking--->

Got the 14 Pro Max recently and its been great. last couple of days however people don't gat audio on calls. This happens if I am using the phone mic, or my airpods however if I make the call via Whatsapp everything is okay.
Most of the other suggestions I've seen suggest cleaning out the mic but that doesnt seem to be a contributing factor here
I've restarted the phone, updated to 17.0.3 I'm not sure what other troubleshooting steps I can do. Does anyone have any other steps I can try?

The solution ended up being resetting the Carrier settings by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

I think the phone has 3 different microphones. There's one on the circuit board that seems to work only on video and loudspeaker calls, which doesn't explain how video calls on Facebook work but it's something to look at. She's out at the moment, I'll see if I can find out more later when she's home.
