Horse wrote: Sun Oct 27, 2024 2:32 pm If the decision is, eventually, that reparations should be paid, couldn't it be paid annually from the international aid budget?

For example:
In 2022, Nigeria was the third largest recipient of UK bilateral country specific ODA, receiving £110 million.
Between 1998 and 2017, the UK committed £2.8 billion in bilateral aid to Ghana.
It might take a while to pay off £18.8 trillion :eh:
That timeline would obviously form part of any negotiations. It would be imbecilic to expect it all in a one-off BACS transfer :D ;)

The UK 2023 ODA budget was £15.37 billion. Possibly 1,000 years might be considered unacceptable?

And, of course, reparations negotiations would include how and where the money was spent. I'd bet that most of it would never leave our shores, instead being used the buy UK goods and services.
And there's the rub. The people at the current meeting asking that reparations be discussed are politicians. If the money gets paid government to government, how much money can the general populous expect to see?

If slave users developed what became substantial chunks of an areas economy eg tea, cane sugar, coffee plantations (rather than extractive industries that disappeared when the product was exhausted), how do you value that?

Where does it stop? Indigenous populations request the backdated GDP of, say Australia, USA as rent of their land? South America calculates the cost of being converted to Catholicism, smallpox etc and wants payback from the Conquistadors?

It's all a bit cloud cuckoo land.

Oh noez, Good old Tommy's been sent to prison for 18 months!

They say he was racist, but all he wanted to do was have people treated differently, depending on what country they were from (or if they were Islamics). In the belief that would somehow be better for him and other English whites. What could possible be racist about that?

They should put all the Wokerys in prison for trying to ensure minorities have rights.

Free Good Old Tommy! He was nice and Brexity!

From Auntie Beeb - Parked electric Mercedes explodes without warning
A mother said her family was "lucky to have got out safely" after their parked electric car exploded and engulfed their house in flames.

Georgina Bayliss from Spratton, Northamptonshire, said their Mercedes EQA had been parked outside their house for several hours before the explosion.

She said her younger son had seen flames around the front of the house and thought the rest of the family and their five dogs were still inside.

Mercedes-Benz UK said it was carrying out an investigation.
Rather worrying this. What would happen to the electric windows or central locking if you were in it at the time?
Blundering about trying not to make too much of a hash of things.

Do they not run off a different battery to the drive train? The amount if EV fires is starting to register with me though.

I think they're like our hybrid. Small battery for the door locks, mirrors etc. Hop in, press the big red button and the little battery fires up the relay and unleashes the big one.

Probably the same as any other windows or locks powered by electricity on any vehicle regardless of fuel
