Car recommendations

Post by dern »

Having finally moved, the van is on borrowed time ferrying stuff from the storage unit to the house and then I want to sell it and buy a car.

I've been looking at a load of cars but thought I'd ask for suggestions just in case there's something I've missed. Criteria are...

- 4 doors as I need to get my parents in to it.
- Fun to drive... we picked up my wife's 330i from storage yesterday and I realised quite how sick of vans I've become.
- Fast... it's doesn't need to be 400bhp but I want it to feel quick, like the 330i or better
- I don't want to spend much more than £10k
- Bonus points for enough room to carry two greyhounds but I have a camper van so it doesn't strictly need to do this.

I don't want a volvo v70 t5, I've had one and it was ok but handled like a barge and was unreliable.

After the hassles I had with a Mazda dealer over a recall on an rx8 I couldn’t consider a Mazda again. That nuked that bridge. Thanks though.

Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, basically a single turbo Evo

Look up Brooklands Car Sales in Ipswich, they had an Impreza WRX with 23000 miles up for £10K, I was tempted but really don't need another silly car

I loved my old wrx Impreza. It was a 2000 wagon I think. I didn’t even mind that much when I blew the engine to pieces and had to put a new one in.

I mean....

330i wagon would seem obvious.

Two of the same car though

We've done it before... his and hers 205 Gtis.

Although you say it would seem obvious, it genuinely hadn't occurred to me. I'd have to find an m-sport where someone had swapped out the 19 inch wheels for 18s like we've done on ours but that would work pretty well.

I really liked my F30 shape 320d, riiiiiiight until it broke it's timing chain (not at all uncommon apparently). Putting 120k on it in 5 years wasn't bad going though.

Pretty much all the car you'd ever want! Unless you want to go a bit faster I suppose.

My current car is easily the fastest on paper I've ever had. Sub 6s to 60 and 155mph limiter, but it doesn't feel that fast. Coming off the roundabout you just press the pedal what feels like a reasonable amount and then look in your rear view mirror and everyone is miles behind you.

If you want something fun I'd suggest test driving first :D

Looks nice. They don’t share much about the cars though.

308 GTI, although having owned a car with a highly strung Prince (THP) engine, I'm not sure I'd take the risk again.

By all accounts they're as good as a Golf GTI, but cheaper and people won't think you're a massive wanker, just a normal wanker.

Golf R?

It's such a personal thing, BMWs do go well. Jags with a supercharged V8 have some gan in them.

The only 'R' Golf you're getting for 10k is an old R32... which is only a teeny bit faster than a remapped GTI of similar vintage but much more thirsty and crazy expensive to tax.

I can see some on eBay. I haven't looked at them, maybe there write offs. Definitely the modern 4 cylinder model.

I imagine any 300+ bhp car for under 10k will have its shortcomings

Having had 6 Forester Turbos in a row, be aware that that Impreza will cost you £710 a year in road tax…😤

This is a common problem with many of the cars I’ve been looking at, the stupid tax band of that period.

I think that a standard golf gti would be a better bet all round than the vr6. The vr6 looks a bit of a lump.
