Electrical question.

Post by Taipan »

Just been round my sons flat and can see this open socket behind his fridge freezer. It’s literally above a double socket? Does it look like wiring for something specific or can I just have a single socket put on there?

It might have been a permanent cable for an appliance and the last occupant just unscrewed and removed the face plate. Did you mean to add a photo?

That’s old colours and the current colours. Red & brown are in a common connector block as is black & blue.

I’d take off the cover on the twin socket and see what colour the wiring is

Hard to tell just from that image,if it's 6mm cable it's probably the supply for a cooker.
I don't think it's from the same supply as the socket as ideally you should have 2 red,2 black & 2 earth wires as it would be part of the ring main, however it could just be spurred of the double socket

If it was a spur you'd only have one set of live/neutral/earth wires, not two.

This gets my vote too. So likely on a separate breaker in your consumer unit/fuse box. Get a tester on it.

I'd stick a socket on it if I lived there.

Bit of a strange habit you have going to see family and looking down the back of their fridge freezer.
Do you do that wherever you visit? :wtf:

We need another socket there, so it would be ideal if we could put one on those wires.

He wanted to put a microwave on that side of the kitchen but there's no wall mounted socekts there. So as the fridge/freezer and dishwasher are there I said to him look to see if theres a spare socket behind the fridge/freezer and thats when he said there was wires hanging out of the wall and no spare socket. He was going to plug an 4 way adaptor into the double but i'm not keen on those things and said i'll see if we can change the double socket for a triple one for a tidier job.
