YouTube woes
Have YouTube just committed digital suicide?
They have been trying to persuade me for moths to buy the 'Premium' version without ads. Ads have occasionally intruded, but they were short and could be tolerated. 10 - 15 second ad, then play. Today they have become VERY intrusive, long boring and utterly tedious. And no obvious way to skip them.

Re: YouTube woes
Google YouTube Revanced.
I used to subscribe to Premium via an overseas account but they clamped down and UK based is stupid price, so now used Revanced for free - works brilliantly, skipping all youtube ads and promotions within videos.

uBlock Origin
I run Firefox and it's one of the recommended extensions. It just works and I don't see YT ads. What browser are you using?

Re: YouTube woes
For me it’s tolerable, depends on what you’re watching but I’m finding usually it’s one ad per video so I can live with that.

Re: YouTube woes
I've got Adblock Plus (free) on the PC which does what it says on the tin.
I got fed up with adverts on Youtube Android so I ditched Spotify and got Youtube Premium for the music and got the benefits of no adverts and the ability to download content. The quality of both music and video is much better with Premium.

Re: YouTube woes
I often watch Youtube on the telly and I'll just go back everytime an advert comes on thats too loud or irritating.
Thats worked fairly well til recently when they fire a 45 second loud as fuck from the start (no foreplay, the bastards) advert in the middle of whatever I'm watching.
Now I'm using the mute button more.

Re: YouTube woes
I suspect its pressure from youTube as a lot of people watch YT vids in their browser and not in the YT app. So YT must lose advertisers revenue?mangocrazy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 10:07 amThat would be a real shame - is it a victim of its own success?Taipan wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 9:18 am I'd never heard of uBlock so thought i;d give ita try as ive given up on duck duck go nd come back to chrome, but it kooks like its use is being shut down...

yes, I imagine so. Too good at what it does, so they try and get it taken down. Re: YouTube woes
I used adblock plus extension for browsing websites with good effect for ages, but now most websites wont let you browse until you've disabled your adblocker. Cant blame them I suppose, but annoying all the same.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 10:22 amyes, I imagine so. Too good at what it does, so they try and get it taken down. Re: YouTube woes
If you're prepared to get really geeky, there's always Pi-Hole. It uses DNS to send ads into a black hole. The ads never even get downloaded to your device, so it means your network will run faster as well.
I've been meaning to try it out but haven't yet got a round tuit...

Re: YouTube woes
Digging a bit deeper, it seems that Pi-Hole can't block YT ads, as the ads are served from the same domain/subdomain as the videos. So all our hopes rest on uBlock Origin...

This.
I find it quite amusing how irate people will get about YouTube et al having ads, or how YouTube defeat ad blockers, as if somehow everyone is entitled to free entertainment or things it costs money to run

Ads in the middle I hate.
Sponsored video's I could live with.
All three together when I'm just trying to find something to pass 10 minutes, nah not happening.
And with a 305 billion dollar revenue last year, 238 of which is from advertising, I won't fret none about blocking adverts.

How is any of that justification for not having to pay for something?MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 8:36 pm Ads at the start I could live with.

"They make loads of money, therefore I shouldn't have to pay, everyone else should". Doesn't sound sensible when you say it out loud to me
"just trying to find something to pass 10 minutes", yet you feel the need to go out of your way to access the service for free.
