Rampage 2024

Post by ChrisW »

I've been watching Brendan Fairclough's line build videos this week - it's interesting seeing a line get put together. Not just the showy bits but also the mundane little paths that need to be built.

Back to the showy bits - this stuck out. Near vertical drop down a cliff with a gap whilst turning left a bit. Mental!

2am tonight is the girl version which again is interesting as it's their first time

Seeing the DMR crew digging and heading to town in dirt and blood has been intense!

The women's wasn't the most interesting thing to watch - even the usually over the top commentators were a bit bored.

It peaked with the first run, which ironically is what's being broadcast again now instead of the men's event - delayed due to bad weather.

Yup, it was a hell of a run though. Some of the rest were a bit samey, but it'll take a year or 3 before they start fully getting to grips with it.

The mens though is preparing to be insane if the practice footage is anything to go by

When you say 'built' do you mean they actually modify the terrain?

Yes, they mould, shape, dig sections to allow jumps/landings.

So they actually reshape the natural terrain so they can ride down it? That's like hammering pitons into a climb. :(

I'm out.

Well yes and no. They don't modify it so they can get down, they modify it to enable tricks within the remit of getting down.

So take off is above sign, landing at bottom, if they just did that into rock and sand, well, they'd die.
However you only have 3 people digging your line and hand tools only.

There are plenty of films of people riding MTBs down the sides of mountains and honestly I find them a bit dull. The self-build element in Rampage adds to the entertainment, at least for me.

There's a creative side to the lines they build, plus it's more interesting watching them ride them than it is watching someone desperately trying to brake in a straight line down a steep natural slope!

Digging, hand tools? Nope. I'm still out.

Like I say, it's like hammering permanent pitons into a rock face to make it easier to climb for you - and everyone who comes after you.

If you can't ride down it, go and find something you can instead of making it easier.

I'm not sure that you're quite seeing the scale of what these guys are doing, They are literally riding off cliffs and without building a landing there is no line to ride, their margin for error is very very small and the consequences of it going wrong are pretty terminal.

There is likely nobody coming down these lines until the Rampage next year because there is only a tiny number of people able to ride these lines.

You know the Paris - Dakar is quite difficult? Only a few can do it. Maybe they could tarmac a few of the tricky bits.

Hacking mountains about to make television shows doesn't float my boat. The fact that they're doing it to make a tv show each year doesn't really change much. No 'line to ride'? *shrug*
