Whats your favourite helmet and why?

Post by ureanooly »

Just getting into riding and not sure what kind of helmet to choose. I'd like to know what's your favourite helmet, and maybe I can get some inspiration from it:)

The most important thing is to buy one that fits and is comfortable, not all helmets are the same shape, go to somewhere like Sportsbike World and try on all the brands of helmets till you find the one that fits the best, then buy the best helmet of that brand you can afford.

I quite like these. Very practical at the petrol shop, smoke, drink or a natter to your mate.

1. Fit - as above. Shop staff should help with this.
2. Comfort - make sure there are no pressure points. A few moments in the shop might be ok, but agony after an hour on the road.
3. Protection. Contrary to long-held belief, expensive isn't always 'better'. Check on https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/

Caveat on '3'. Higher price might get you a Pinlock visor (worth having), or a race rep paint job (not IMHO).

And much easier to use if you wear specs.

I like white

Cheaper, more visible and reflect the sun when it's hot so fractionally cooler

But most important is fit. A loose helmet will slip and break your neck so do what the big cheese says and get to a shop where they will help you find one that's a snug but comfortable fit.

As above best bet is go try some on and go with what feels the most comfortable and fits your head the best.

I was originally an Arai user but went across to Shoei at some point and stuck with various Shoei’s over the years. I got rid of all my Arai’s but kept one of them and I have kept one Shoei. The rest have been sold since I got rid of the bike.

As said, fit and comfort first.

I used to like Arai, but their new visit system is so intricate I'm going to have to stick with Shoei for now.

Mine was the one I never bought. It was carbon and, at the time £1k was a bit much for a lid. I nearly walked out of the shop with it on. I forgot it was there, honest guv! So I stuck with Schuberth flippy (not a C5, they don't flip AFAIK). *sigh*

I guess plain old carbon is old hat now because now we have....tada!...graphene helmets. I suspect that the motorcycle fashion house that is Momo have incorporated a microgram in their helmet rather made a whole helmet from it.

My old Nava helmet with the thumb wheel operated visor. I'm not sure you can buy them new anymore.

Looking at places like eBay I wish I had the Kangols we got as a 'freebie' when I bought my CX500. People are selling them as 'vintage'. Not sure what the attraction of a 45 year old lid is.

A saffer workmate had a white Bell full-face which I rather admired....until I picked it up. I think it weighed as much as his Honda 400/4!

Helmets are one of those items where a mate's recommendation may well not be right for you. As many have said, helmet fit is a very personal thing and what suits me could be a painful (and expensive) mistake for you. Get yerself to a helmet emporium with loads of choice and start trying helmets on, and seek advice from the shop staff. Arai and Shoei are the most spendy, but there is plenty of choice at lower price points.

Plain colours (esp. white and black) are cheapest and you will pay quite a lot more for a MotoGP race rep design on the same helmet..

As said, fit and comfort is most important. Used AGV, Shoei, Arai, Soumy and Shark over the years. Been using Shark for last 12 or so years and like em a lot. When I bought my last lid I tried a Shoei and it fit great but the strap choked me and the drop down sun visor wasn't very dark, nor come down far enough. So, back to Shark. Think interiors of Arai, Shoei are really nice but they are very spendy

I have Arai and Shoei helmets currently but I like the look of some AGV ones, shame they don’t fit my head.

Buy a helmet that fits you properly and ignore the badge on them. Try one on in the shop for at least 10 minutes so you find the bit that might pinch or rub the wrong way as you won’t notice in a 60 second try on. The shop won’t mind as they are used to people walking around their shops with kids on ;)
