We had a big rig leaving the Port of LA this evening with a container full of EV batteries. It got in a wreck & over turned on the bridge to the port. FD showed up just in time for the batteries to start exploding & they're now just watching from 1/4 mile away. Port access is shut down until it all burns out. They're saying it could be two days.

I keep hearing that nobody is buying EVs but theyre all over the bloody place round here, it's not an especially rich area but they're everywhere. Must be a lot of people getting em for free then.

I'm working all over the (large) county and a bit of southwest Scotland and it's the same all over the area I cover.

Course it was, it had to be either something to do with EVs or renewable energy causing a problem. Couldn't possibly have been a bunch of batteries for sex toys or power drills Facebook and the Daily Mail wouldn't have been able to cope were it otherwise.

I was reading about this earlier. Jeep are part of Stellantis and you have to wonder if the same tech is shared to other group hybrids. I had to Google the full list of Stellantis brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, Vauxhall.

My parents came to visit this weekend, they drove up in their Electric Mini. Usually they only use that car for local driving and they have a Jag XF they take longer trips in / tow their caravan. They thought they'd give the mini a whizz this time.

Bit of an education for them and a stark illustration of the price differences across the country.

In the ~5000miles they've had it they've not paid a penny to charge it because they've done it 100% from Solar. They had a go on a public charger at home before they left just to see if they could. Nearest on to their house is a 5 minute drive away and charged them 44p/kWh to charge at 7kW.

They drove the ~120 miles here and partially charged once (unnecessarily it turns out) on the trip up. Arrived 46% full thanks to the mid journey top up.

When they got here they plugged into one of the three separate 50kW chargers a 5 minute walk from my house and paid 53p/kWh. So slightly more than they paid at home, but to charge >4x quicker (their car can only accept ~35kW). Plugged in for 45 minutes and they were full. 'cause it's only a 5 min walk down the street they didn't wait with the car.

They drove home today, all in one shot, didn't charge up and arrived with 20% battery still remaining.

They're gonna bring the electric mini every time now If they leave home fully charged the 'up' is essentially free (solar FTW) and it only costs ~£15 to fully charge down the street from my house. I might even get generous and let them plug it in to my garage

The Tesla I’ve had at work on trial, which I’m pleased to say I’ve now unloaded to another office as it’s not great build quality and it kept breaking, cost £15.40 to charge for an extra 100 miles and took 45 mins on a supercharger. To me, that doesn’t seem great but I’ve very little experience of charging.
The chargers at work could also charge it, that same extra 100 miles took 14 hours as our chargers are obviously low powered.
I have a Maxus pickup truck coming soon so I’ll see how that performs.
All FYI as I’m no expert.

There's so much fake news out there and lots of consumer learning to do.

My mum didn't even realise that the 44p charger at home was only 1/7th the power of the 53p one here. Or that the one in the motorways services they used (79p) can charge 50 times faster* than the one by their house.

From her POV it's mostly moot, this was the first time they'd ever used a public charger. As above it's been free for them to date 'cause they only charge on solar at home.

My mum was fretting they'd get stuck in traffic and run out of charge, I had to tell her the range goes UP when you're crawling at 15mph.

*or at least, it would be able to if there were a car on the market which could accept it
