I miss nearly getting food poisoning from untraceable seafood kept in an unrefrigerated old van for God only knows how long....

I think it was only the alcohol in our stomachs that saved us from botulism.

Cockles & mussels were lovely but I remember my dad trying to get me to eat a whelk, they were rank and impossible to chew

Same here! Nowadays, I eat just about anything that swims or crawls in the sea but have never tried a whelk again. Dont recall seeing them on seafood stalls anymore though?

All exported to France, Spain and beyond where, for some reason, they actually like them!

1946. A photograph of baby Patricia asleep in a suitcase whilst Mrs M. Mullins, her mother, tries to feed her two other children, Maureen and Christopher, taken by an unknown photographer for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1946.
Mrs Mullins and her husband had brought their family to Kensington, London, due to the overcrowded housing conditions in Britain after World War Two, they had decided to squat in this room in the Duchess of Bedford House, a luxury flat complex standing empty awaiting repairs until homes could be provided for them. Forty-six flats were occupied by squatters in this way

Late M-in-Law was a midwife soon after then.

Drawers were often used as cots in the slum areas.

I used to do that with mine, it saved traveling with a carry cot.
