Green bin waste...

Just started charging for brown bins here (garden waste)

I’m not paying as we’ve only got a small garden and only really need a bin once a year when we clear the raised beds of whatever has died down.

Otherwise weeds etc just go in the general waste bin. I can see the point of charging but it’s only going to lead to more fly tipping.

Bit different here, as there are communal bins along roads, nearest one to me are about a mile away. I just drop my bin bag in one when I need to.

Its unfortunate that people from outside this area fly tip by the bins as their towns don't have council tips. This forced the council in partnership with the police to send up drones and surveillance cameras to catch fly tippers in the act and fine them heavily.

The tip is great, two mikes away and I've never queued to use it. I've a big garden and can generate a couple of trailer loads of cutting a week sometimes.

The bin charge is €82 a year, which I think is good, and my council tax is under €500 a year.

I go to the same tip at Fenton Barns where the council take the garden waste. They get weighed in and charged by the tonne. I get charged £35 if the van is full or i have just one builders bag full. I dont pay for mine. I leave the grass cuttings on the lawn as its better for the grass and when i do my hedge i just take it to the tip when a customer is paying. Round here in NB the fly tipping is now noticeable. Its individual households chucking green waste away what will just mulch down but its the bags, What cant they just dump it and take the bags home

We have a green one for recycle stuff, a gray one for yard waste & a bigger blue one for regular trash. One Tuesdays we have three trucks show up to empty the three different bins...

... then they all drive to the same landfill & dump it all in one big fucking pile.

Provided you cut often so the cuttings are small and you aren't cultivating a bowling green (ie not scalping it every time) probably not a lot of cons. Some of the moisture might get back into the ground which will help in summer.

Otherwise it can build up as too much 'thatch' which encourages moss etc (Google 'lawn thatch'). Then you're into scarifying it which is a pain.

I cut mine every two weeks and leave the cuttings down. Think if i had a thick lush lawn what grows fast i would probably cut it weekly and leave every 2nd cut down. You could start a compost heap with the other cut. Around here the council have been leaving the grass down for years and the play parks are all nice weed free fields.

Anyone know if we are allowed to adapt our garden waste bins into compost bins. Mrs D enjoys a bit of veg growing so will come in handy. ??

They may not be as weed free as they look (I assume they don't spray or scarify or aerate/hollow tine them). One theory is here in the section 'Strong, independent and generous'.
