Asking him why the manufacturers supply a 13mm spanner in the toolkit did nothing to sway his firmly held, factually correct opinion. He said it must be a non standard toolkit...
That's a pretty extreme example of denial. A 13mm head has been standard on most Japanese M8 bolts since the early/mid 70s. Some 60s bikes had 14mm M8 headed bolts and more recently 12mm has made the occasional appearance, but if I could only carry two spanners they would be 10mm and 13mm.
I think every Japanese bike I've had used M8 bolts with 12mm heads.

You may have a point there. The most recent Japanese bike I've owned was a 1997 TL1000S and I can't reliably remember bolt head sizes on that. But my 1988 VFR does have a fair number of 12mm headed M8 bolts.

And a lot of 8mm headed M6 bolts, particularly on the engine.

The Falco uses a lot of 12mm headed M8 bolts and 8mm headed M6 bolts. Perversely the KTM Duke mainly uses Torx fasteners.

Found out that Pedro Acosta often turns up at the Fortuna Circuit, which is used primarily for racing pit bike, small capacity race bikes and supermotos.

Three different track configurations, very well surfaced, and well attended by all ages, all bikes.

Been there a few times recently, and its not difficult to see why there are so many Spaniards are successful in Moto3 Moto2 and MotoGP.
Most regions throughout Spain have similar tracks. Plus the weather to practice 12 months a year.

If only I could be arsed to be that interesting, I've no idea why Japanese bikes have 12mm heads on M8 bolts, tbh I've never thought about it before, I think my Japanese car also has them.
