Re: In todays news...
Loads of folk moaning about banning smoking outside pubs etc.
Pubs will close blah blah blah.
Just looked and smoking is declining. Only about 12% of adults smoke.
So the maximum number of folk who will avoid pubs is almost negligible. And not all of them will boycott pubs
Indeed more folk might go if it's all smoke free.

Re: In todays news...
The problem I see with that is smokers will just go and stand out on the pavement, blocking it and causing accidents. Pubs in London without a beer garden make getting round some areas a PITA.Yorick wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 7:27 pm Loads of folk moaning about banning smoking outside pubs etc.

Re: In todays news...
That's what they said when the smoking ban first came in.
Taking the pre-ban years, 1980 to 2006, the average percentage loss of pubs per year was 0.65%. From 2007, the year of the ban, onwards, the average has been 2.8%. In 2007, there were 56,791 pubs in the UK, so one would have expected, based on the long-term trend, 369 pubs to close. The actual figure was 1,409. So, an ‘excess’ of 1,040 pubs closed, suggesting that perhaps three-quarters of the closures may have been caused by the ban. The ‘excess’ closures have continued at a similarly high rate in subsequent years. (Studies of the pub industry by Nielsen PLC and PriceWaterhouseCoopers provide additional support for the hypothesis that the smoking ban is a key driving force behind pub closures.)

How does it make sense that the smoking ban was the cause of [much] later closures?MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 9:04 pmThe ‘excess’ closures have continued at a similarly high rate in subsequent years. Re: In todays news...
Much later closures can't be chalked up solely to the smoking ban IMHO, but was it a factor in some form or another, yes, again in my humble opinion as were the increases in alcohol prices etc etc, but you'd need to ask them as I pretty much knocked pubs on the head as a regular activity once the ban came in.Horse wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 9:33 pmHow does it make sense that the smoking ban was the cause of [much] later closures?MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 9:04 pmThe ‘excess’ closures have continued at a similarly high rate in subsequent years. Re: In todays news...
Feb 25th i will have stopped smoking for 12 years. I go to pubs less due to the price of beer rather than standing next to a smelly smoker. As for strain on the NHS these smelly smokers pay the tax and have a right to the NHS. If you interfering greedy cunts stopped cuts in the NHS they would still have enough staff to cope.

I wonder how much of a hit online dating has made to pubs?
When I were a lad (misty eyed jumpers etc.) the pubs and clubs were the main cop off zones and I reckon will have suffered a bit due to that change also.

Changing behavioural patterns and social media etc are probably the big nails in the coffin. The young folk where I work (some of whom are stoooodents) just don't go out and get pissed like people used to.

Re: In todays news...
I think it's much more the fact it's £5-7 a pint now. You buy a round for you and 2 mates and it's £20.
You grab a burger, that's £17, oh you want fries, £4 more.
You're now nearly £50 in and you've got not a lot to show for it.
You can buy bottles of whatever beer/ale for £2 a go instead.
And you don't have to be surrounded by irritating pricks (other than your wives)
I like a beer out most weekends on a cycle ride, but it's less and less common now

Tesco are probably as big a factor as anything yeah - you don't even see off licences any more! Supermarket booze has undercut everyone.
Bargain Booze - yeah OK, but they general sell cheap/rubbish stuff.

£3 a pint isn't exactly setting the world on fire though is it?.gremlin wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 1:55 pmMy popularity has soared since obtaining a PerfectDraft machine.weeksy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 12:48 pm I think it's much more the fact it's £5-7 a pint now. But does your Hobgoblin come out of a machine?!
Just about to order two kegs (Lowenbrau - remember that? and Spaten - nice) for £60. Free delivery, so I'm up on shoe leather already. That's 12 litres or 25.3 pints to be pedantic. Bear in mind I get £5 of credit to spend on more beer by returning the kegs for free, so there's another tenner.
My poor maths works that out to under two a quid for a nice pint. Maybe no good if you prefer ales, as the system is aimed at lager-type beers (plus one cider - Orchard Pig. Not my bag), but bloody hell, it pours really nicely and keeps fresh. Not that that's much of an issue in my house.

25 pints would last me until about 20:26, if I started at 17:30
