Endurance test
How long can you stand, hands on hips, on one leg? a) eyes open b) eyes closed.
Apparently you can roughly tell how old you are from the result. (Or what sort of musculo-skeletal condition you're in). I try and do it when I'm brushing my teeth rather than hands on hips 'cos my leccy toothbrush buzzes every 30s. Some days are better than others - haven't figured out why yet.

Nah. I'll post up the quoted figures for the different age groups later. People can report back if they're older/younger than they actually are if they want to.

Re: Endurance test
It's been known about for a long time.
Back in 2007 when I was doing physio after my by-pass op I told the physioterrorist about it and as there was a good range of ages (including the nurses) we line up the inmates according to age and on the word go they all stood on one leg with their eyes closed.
People gave up in age order, oldest first with only one person out of order - that was near the end of the line where ages were younger.
There's a few predictable things with humans, it's about 50% each way how you cross your arms over your chest and how you interlink your fingers for example and it's nothing to do with whether you are left or right handed.

Re: Endurance test
Yup. It's the SLS test (Single Leg Stance). There's a fair bit more a physio can tell from it, not just age. I'm better on my left leg than right, although I'm right side dominant. (The right knee is the one that had the arthroscopy and I lost muscle mass on the right leg before the op). It's also much easier for me with footwear with arch support because I'm a bit flat footed.Yambo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 9:52 am It's been known about for a long time.

This gives an indication of what a physio will be looking for -

Between us we could assemble one reasonably fit human - her musculo-skeletal and my cardio-vascular - and keep the rest for spares.

Re: Endurance test
Count me out!! My spares aren’t worth much . And I definitely can’t balance on one leg with my eyes closedCount Steer wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 7:50 pm

I’m not sure I’ve ever been able to do it for long as an adult, and I’ve had a fair few very ‘interesting’ falls! Not injurious in the way they mean but probably only cos I fall well and have paddingInability to perform a single leg stance for at least 5 seconds is a predictor of injurious falls (but not of all falls).
Interestingly they made me do this a bit in both rehab places, no one ever said anything about my inability though - pretty sure I never got to a minute
Must practice again as if I can build some stability that might be useful

After my cerebellum and grain stem damage, I struggle to get my legs to do what I want.
Standing on one leg? Easy. Staying upright? More challenging ...
