I use 'cognisant' a fair bit.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 12:12 pmA while ago all my colleagues remained cognisant of things, rather than just keeping them in mind.gremlin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 11:54 amSame here. Words go through periods of being the latest buzzword in finance. Bifurcated was one a while back.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 11:22 am I hear the word bifurcated all the time at work . I would consider it a 'normal' word, given how often I use/hear it.
Can I chuck in 'contiguous'?
And I do like to use the word 'Magnificent' as much as possible.

Re: Odd Seldom used Words
There should be a matching BYP thread for the annoying, trendy use of words that reek of feeble attempts at pomposity. Like 'whilst'. (The Merkins start a lot of these fashions and they should stop it). It gives me conniptions.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 12:12 pmA while ago all my colleagues remained cognisant of things, rather than just keeping them in mind.gremlin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 11:54 amSame here. Re: Odd Seldom used Words
I'd like to see the word 'Minge' brought back into common usage.

Does actually mean something different to practical TBF.
I enjoy saying "more massive", sounds dumb but actually correct . Something which is more massive has more mass.

Re: Odd Seldom used Words
The word litotes is rarely used today, even by those who actually use the construction.

Oh, I like 'otiose'.
Also - I've used it on here before and someone liked it - 'flâneur' an idle stroller who saunters around. I suppose 'mooch' is similar but flâneur seems more elegant.

Dearth doesn't get used much, you could say there is a dearth of dearth.

Re: Odd Seldom used Words
Does have a different meaning to 'while'.
While is used to describe time, whilst is used to describe contrast. For example: "I shivered in the bathroom while I ran a bath whilst my sister stayed in her warm bed."
And you never heard a song

Re: Odd Seldom used Words
Yup. One, as a noun, is a period of time (but may also be a conjunction, preposition or verb) the other is during a period of time, so it takes a while to understand and whilst (or while) one is whiling away the time considering the difference, others appear to be using the words at random while others don't appear to use whilst at all.Horse wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 1:41 pmDoes have a different meaning to 'while'.
