Gutted for Matthew Hudson Smith. That Quincy Hall chap's pace over the last few metres in the 400 was phenomenal.

Her hubby Jason is just as "bad" but with a Bolton accent instead.
Have to wonder what their kids sound like

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
I've always been amazed by cameramen. Sports, science, geography program etc.
But today, hmm.
A top lad was given the job of filming the women's shot putt. A big 4kg ball being chucked about 70ft at leisurely pace.
In the highlights bit, he missed every landing.
I could have done better with my phone, even if I'd had eleventeen pints

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
BBC just showed highlights of break dancing.
WTF..
Many folk moan about some sports in olympics.
But this isn't a sport. It's a dance
Next olympics.
10 lads at bar. Give them all 10 pints
Then they have to carry 3 pints across dance floor to pals without spilling any

Blimey. A tie in the mens high jump.
They were offered the choice of both getting a gold medal.
The Kiwi said yes. The Yank said no and he wants a jump off.
I'd have settled for a shared gold. It's still a gold.
Gonna be exciting

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
It backfired on the Yank
But an amazing last night of athletics.
3 medals for GB with each being a national record.
My fave 3 sports are bike racing, footy and athletics.
I can't say which it best.
But if it was a choice of TV watching, I'd probably choose the athletics events 1500m and under, over the other 2.
If a GB athlete was involved
I'm bouncing inside tonight

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
Apart from a few issues that all went quite well, so well done France.
Apparently, based on medals, we should stick to sports that you do sitting down - cycling, hosses and rowing/canoeing. Someone has calculated, based on total sports funding that each GB gold cost £3M+ ( the cheapest medal of all was the arty swimming because we put about five bob into it.
According to how the Americans report the games we came 3rd in the medals table (they do it on total medals 'cos it puts them top/above China). I always thought they should do the list based on 3 points for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze.
When are the Winter Olympics?

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
I'm sort of the same. A "sport" should be one where there is a reasonable chance of you getting sweaty and/or you have to be "athletic" - otherwise it shouldn't be in the Games.
Golf. Shooting. Etc. Nope, sorry. I appreciate these are skilled, but you may as well be good at tiddlywinks.
I realise that this rule leaves the door open to Dancing stuff, but the OC should just veto that out of hand.
I imagine there's a lot of lobbying (bribery and corruption) involved but FFS these people need to act -not- like they're at the big table at the Parish Council.

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
The Olympics used to have an arts section with gold medals for things like Poetry and Town Planning.
It's supposed to be about being really good at shit, no? Well the modern Olympics are anyway.

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
Breakdancing didn't bother me at all, neither did Greco-Roman wrestling, Taekwondo, nag dancing, hopping about waving a streamer, synchronised swimming etc etc.
I just didn't watch them.

I thought they made some good points too, the stuff about the food, lack of air- con and the general disadvantage of poorer nations etc.gremlin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 1:27 pm For once I find myself in agreement with a Gruaniad column:

It is sort of turning into a mega-Cirque du Soleil event for global TV. Having the next one in LA/Hollywood is probably appropriate.

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
Anything that needs to be judged strikes me as ripe for scrapping. If it needs a jury of experts to decide the winner, it's not really a sport, is it?

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
I mainly agree. But gymnastics and diving should stay.
Boxing is a true sport. Maybe fight till one goes down?

Re: Olympics, who's watching ?
Indeed, boxing and wrestling were in original Olympics. And horse racing.
