Ps5 overheating

Post by dern »

Just bought a ps5 (I know I’m late to the game) and it shuts itself off because it’s overheated while two minutes in to the included demo game. Returned it and got a replacement and that does the same. Is this a known problem? Only thing I could find from a brief search is when they get blocked with fluff but these were new. I know it’s warm at the moment but they must sell them in hotter climates than this.

It's not in a snug media centre or in a closed compartment?

The need a good bit of ventilation.

My PS4 would get very warm if I left the front door of the TV stand closed when in use.

My PS5 just sits behind the telly and I've never had a problem.

The old Xbox360 used to have a funny quirk where it would overheat and crash if stood upright. But laid flat it wouldn't happen. The hypothesis is that I'm the vertical orientation the very cheap solder would expand and touch another piece, but if laid flat then the motherboard was flat and the solder expanded away from the board and other bits of solder.

Try laying it flat?

I’ve just exchanged it for another but got one with a disc drive this time, hoping it’s from a completely different batch.

I’ve just unpacked it and I think I’ve figured out the issue. I assumed that the thin end went at the top. Didn’t look at the box but it’s clear from the new one, with the disc drive, that the thin end goes at the bottom. I must have blocked the vents by doing that. FFS.

Fair. It’s been a long, hot and very stressful day.

Doesn't the stand screw into the bottom?

I can't be arse to get up and walk the 2m to have a look at mine, but I'm sure there is a flat bit that screws onto the bottom, which kind of makes it obvious which way up it goes :)

There wasn’t a stand. Mine just looked like this, although I put it the other way up. This just looked wrong to me which is why I put it the other way up. This isn’t mine by the way…

Apparently there was actually a whitepaper/press release/something from Microsoft about the root cause analysis of that solder problem - several years after they stopped selling XboX360s. One of the materials engineers at work told me about it, but I forget the details :D

EDIT: here you go, thermal fatigue of the solder.

A friend of mine had a nice little earner using a works heat tray/ jiggler to unfatigue the solder in xbox's. He told me he'd do 4 or 5 a week until his bosses put a stop to it.............when you make military comms, they take a dim view of foreigners!

I've got the fat version of the PS5 (with disk) and mines mounted to the wall standing upright like the one in your pic. It's mounted just to the side of the TV. Never had any overheating issues in 100s of hours even when it was 40c+ the other year. My wall mount is this one.

Can't link to Amazon for some reason but it's the sciuU Wall Mount

Needs to go up half an inch so the cables are horizontal.

That's the amazon pic for the wall mount, not mine :D I've mounted mine so you can see any wires at all.

Why has that Xbox got a PlayStation sticker on it, why are there Playstation games on the counter top and if it is a cunningly disguised Playstation, you're not going to play many games with those Xbox controllers.

Never noticed that about the pic! Good spot. I never even noticed the controllers

Luckily the mount works a treat!! Still can't post a link but the other pics are of PS5, I'm guessing it's usual Chinese quality marketing.
