Blocking Current Affairs/Politics

@Ian was asking elsewhere if we can block it so users do no see the Politics thread/sections.

The first part of this isn't too tough, we can restrict and of the forum/sub-forums to be viewable by any/all/none/some.

The only thing i don't know is how easy it is to make them so they don't show up in new posts.

At the moment we only have 1 user requesting this and we'll have to pay some money to @HiFi Kabin our tech mate to give us a bit of a hand with it, so really need to gauge interest in the task.

So, would you like the Politics section hidden from your user account ?

I tend to look at the <new posts> filter rather than specific forums. By choice I avoid chat that falls into forums like <survival skills> and <trackdays, motorsport ..> because I really, really have nothing to add - but it makes no difference to me whether they're in/out a particular forum.

What problem is this solving? If the reason is that politics is contentious, and that this puts off the newbs, wouldn't it be better to hide the politics forum from the casual browser and those with a low post count (the latter would also prevent the occasional alias troll).

The money would come out of forum funds not my own pocket.

I 100% agree with you mate, if it wasn't for the fact i HAVE to look in there at times, i never would. It's honestly of 0 interest to me.

Right then.... here's where we are

The update I can do no problem, but probably not for a few days. Do you want 'warning' of when I'll be in or just do it?

The Politics forum is reasonably easy to do with permissions, but the user has to opt in

The workflow its like this:-

A new usergroup is created which users can opt into.

Politics access permissions is changed to be viewable to members of the above usergroup only

Members can then opt in (or out if they are fed up with it) in their UCP > usergroups (of course you can also add/remove them if you wish) I don't think there is a method to make everyone initially a member, but I'll check that out.

Its the method I use on my board for identical reasons.

Let me know if you are happy with that and I can set it up and write a 'how to' for your members

So i've requested that all members are IN as default, but using their Control Panel they can opt out/in at any given time.

It'll take a few days for him to sort as he's got a life outside of here but it'll get done and you'll see a Sticky in the Politics forum with instructions.

You now have the option not to see the Current affairs, Politics, News. forum by joining the No Politics usergroup in your UCP

Follow This Link click the radio button next to "No Politics", make sure that the Drop Down "Join Selected" is showing and Submit the page, then confirm. If at a later date you wish to see that forum, then follow the same process but select "Resign Group" from the dropdown.

I like the politics section, it gives me lots of differing viewpoints from real people who also post about other stuff so a possibly reasonable judgement can be made of their overall mind set. Sure there's views and posters that grate* but meh, that's to be expected.

And sometimes even causes me to doubt my own viewpoint.

For once I'm serious.
