Has anyone here been on Sertraline?

I'm not keen on the idea of anti depressants but this has been suggested - looking for info on side effects people have actually had (rather than the massive list that comes with the meds!!)

The girlfriend has been on these. She suffered feeling sick every day until lunchtimeish, after 2 weeks she asked to change and is now on sitalopram which she doesn’t get the sickness with. The also didn’t see much benefit with sertraline, in fact she said it seemed to heighten her anxiety. She is very anxious at the moment due to family stuff, flat sale etc.
goggling sertraline, it says it’s about 4 weeks before you see any improvement, it’s not an instant fix.

All of the SSRIs seem a bit hit and miss and you'll almost always find what it's meant to be treating listed as a side-effect on the leaflet.
If you feel it's not working or making things worse then don't let a doctor fob you off, for various reasons some will ignore you and just keep telling you to take it.

Yep, I was on it for 18 months, never again, I'm not going to go into details but suffice to say the side effects far far outweighed the supposedly intended positives of the drug.

But everyone is different and reacts to medication in their own specific way.

I'm currently on Sertraline. No noticeable side effects and at the moment no positive effects either.

I went to the doctor about 3 weeks ago as I knew I needed help - things have not improved. I explained that I didn't want any heavyweight medication, I needed a walking stick rather than a wheelchair, a medical kick up the arse basically.

He was happy with my explanations of what's going on, (I had a hospital translator there but the doc asked me to use Turkish as much as possible) and prescribed the Sertraline. I was supposed to go back for 'control' after a week but had to go to UK, then an astronomy event so I'll go in one day next week.

I didn't expect an instant fix and that hasn't happened but I'm showing some improvement despite the hot and humid weather making everyone a procrastinator.

It seems to be the most commonly prescribed SSRI so as a result you will find pretty much every single side effect reported by somebody.

On that basis I reckon there's almost no point asking, I could tell you what I've witnessed, but it's different for everybody, so maybe give it a go and see what experience you get!

Thanx guys. I am not at all sure about trying it as usually I can get things under control, but it was suggested again so I reckoned I'd think about it and ask about it.

Equally - I'm away from here weekdays for three months starting in three weeks, so maybe a change will help for a bit

I would echo this.

I’d add that I personally wouldn’t recommend it for anything other than a low dose pain killer. I can’t say this is professional advice- so I’ll say ‘in my experience’


Most prescribed along with Citalopram. These drugs are so hit and miss re: benefits, but so absolutely hit re: side effect profile. At their worse, I’ve known people to end their lives. That sounds dramatic- and clumsy people would say they were depressed anyway, but think of it more like giving a fat person cake for breakfast every day and expecting them to lose weight by that alone.


‘In my experience’ I’ve seen a few antidepressants work- Mirtazepine seems to be pretty good, but it’s as/more important to working through ‘formulation’ with your health care person to work through what’s actually going on.

Some people get on with it and some people don't. Like any SSRI, there are many SSRI and some work and some don't. While some make things worse. As you say, the list of side effects doesn't take in to account interactions with other meds.

Any negative effects talk to the doctor, can take a bit to work but the negative can be quicker. If this one doesn't work you are not alone in the medicine not working. There are others meds to try till you find the right one.

As for sertraline, I know of a few that get one with it. Some even got on with electro therapy! Everyone is unique, if something does not work for yiu there are other options.
