Phones showing names of businesses even if not in contacts

Post by Noggin »

Not sure how else to write that!! LOL

A mate's mum as an Apple phone and it works for her, they don't want her to have to change and learn the Android system.

BUT - on his (Android) phone, if he gets a call from an unknown number, the phone displays who it thinks the call is coming from.

His mum has been scammed before (older lady that isn't switched on to tech) and he's tried to reduce some of the possibility by putting all the services and bank and other 'usual' numbers into her contacts list.

My question is, anyone know if it's possible to switch this option on in an Apple phone? I'm not aware of it, but then I'm probably not much more tech savvy than my mate's mum!! LOL LOL

If she has all the important numbers stored then my wife's method may work, any unkown number goes to voicemail and if it's important she'll call back.

Android does it by utilising the power of Google to do a fast internet search on the incoming phone number, and then displaying the corresponding business name, if found.

Android also adds business names to numbers in the call log that have been dialed, ie outgoing calls.

No idea how to turn it on or off. No idea if Apple can do it or not, nor how to turn it on if Apple can do it.

As Mussels says, any unknown or unexpected numbers go to voicemail, and any calls that happen to be picked up from unknown callers to be treated with 100% scepticism, and no personal information to be shared, whatsoever.

I generally never answer an unknown number Iet it ring out and then Google it and if it's a scammer there's usually a website with loads of people complaining about it

He does the same. But his mum is old and answers any call regardless. Bit of a challenge!!

My home phone has started to do something similar since we went internet phone. It comes up with something like 'Nuisance?'

You reckon in the old days people would shoot the incoming pigeon in case it was someone trying to sell you a new sundial or something?

Did new mobile phone contracts recently & received this text (among many) afterwards from EE:

Avoiding unknown numbers out of fear of scammers? Good news is we can now give you a heads up if you’re getting a spam or scam call, to help you decide which ones to answer and which ones to avoid.

Most of the spam calls I get claim to be from EE.
