Re: New Ford Capri
Unless it goes backwards into hedgerows with monotonous regularity, that ain't a Capri!

Re: New Ford Capri
Possibly overthinking it, but how do they compare in terms of the excess bodywork etc on the new one compared to the no doubt much better fuel economy. How miles over the lifetime might it take to balance out?Rockburner wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 12:25 pmAt least a Transit has always been a van.cheb wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 12:09 pm It's pants.
Lolz
Who cares what they've called it, it's only a car. See also Beetle, MINI, 500 and probably loads more. How much of each model of Transit have in common with the previous one as an example. Granted some are merely facelifts, but a mk7 compared to a mk1?
The Capri has been various things over the years - but generally it was a somewhat sporty 2-door coupe, not a grossly resource wasting SUV.

It's a bit suspect to go full hair shirt over it, the least resource consuming vehicle would be and old small Pug on waste veg oil or the like. Condemning something for resource wasting on a bike forum is, to me anyway, similar to complaining that other road users might be a bit overenthusiastic with their speed and something should be done. Al that resource either parked up 99% of the time, and the 1% uses more fuel and rubber than average.
Ford got a lot of stick when they replaced the Capri with a Sierra variant, big engine, two doors, too.
As for their naming, what about the Ford Probe?

They rebooted the Renault Clitoris??? I don't think the EV will get the same label, even if you do look like a total fanny driving one.

Re: New Ford Capri
2.0 Manta was quicker than 2.0 Capri, 2.0 GTE Manta was faster than a 3.0 Capri, and Capris were really shit to drive, Mantas were pretty good to drive, certainly as good as late SierrasBigjawa wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 2:52 pm I grew up around Capris, my uncles both drove 3-Litre S's, I had 4 of the bloody things myself, but that new car doesn't bother me at all, because the Capri, in hindsight, was an agricultural rustbucket that was actually inferior in every way to the Manta apart from straight line speed.
I was more annoyed by Fiat bringing out the "new" Panda, at the time I was driving a 750L original and to me that was the real deal.
So as an old duffer former Capri driver, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Re: New Ford Capri
It's the 5 they've re-booted. I had a couple of those & they were ace - but only one Clio, which I greatly miss. Electrical faults & shitty fog-lights notwithstanding. Photo from its later years...

Re: New Ford Capri
My mum had a series of 5s and then Clios when I was a kid.
We used to get a family of 4 in a 1.4 litre Clio RT nay problem at all. But nowadays you need a 3 tonne SUV for the same job apparently.

Re: New Ford Capri
Back in the day the ad's for the 5 said "Renault 5, what's yours called?" .. which lead to at least one billboard being sprayed with "Clitoris, because every cunts got one"

I had a 2.0 GT/E, it was great. Best Sierra was the XR4x4 2.9, I liked it.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 7:27 pm2.0 Manta was quicker than 2.0 Capri, 2.0 GTE Manta was faster than a 3.0 Capri, and Capris were really shit to drive, Mantas were pretty good to drive, certainly as good as late SierrasBigjawa wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 2:52 pm I grew up around Capris, my uncles both drove 3-Litre S's, I had 4 of the bloody things myself, but that new car doesn't bother me at all, because the Capri, in hindsight, was an agricultural rustbucket that was actually inferior in every way to the Manta apart from straight line speed.

My wee 1.2 Fabia has more power than a 3.0 Capri.

Re: New Ford Capri
I'm not sure if you're aware, but back in the late 70's Ford sold a car called the Escort, it was rear wheel drive
In the 80's the Escort became Front Wheel drive
Completely different car, same name.
What the OP talks about has been happening for ever !

Re: New Ford Capri
Kind of... cars have always evolved.
Not sure the difference between a Mk2 and Mk3 Escort is quite as stark as between a Capri and a Capri though!

Re: New Ford Capri
The Escorts where back to back, the Capri has had a 40 year? absence.
Re: New Ford Capri
It's all true, and they're just names and marketing.
The point, though, is that all Escorts were mid-sized 2 or 4-door saloons/hatchbacks/estates. They fitted the same brief and filled the same segment. Sure, early ones were RWD, later were FWD, as was the trend for all cars. Also, some were fast, some were slow, some were black, some were red. But they did the same job.
With the Capri name, the original was petrol and the new one EV, but again, that's just how the market moves on. But the original was a sleek, 2-door lightweight sports car, the new one a large, 2-tonne 5-seater SUV. There's nothing about the spirit of the original in it whatsoever... it serves a different purpose for different people in different situations.
It would be like Yamaha bringing out a new Goldwing competitor and calling it the RD350... it would just be odd and unnecessary.
Anyway. Like I say. I'm not bothered about it

Yeah but that 3 pot engine is shit.Bigjawa wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 8:32 amI had a 2.0 GT/E, it was great. Re: New Ford Capri
It's true. One was a little sporty coupe, the other a mini SUV.
In their defence, I suppose at least they were both based on Fiestas.
They've also (sort of) done it with Galaxie/Galaxy.
